The Queen is 78 years old. If Charles lives to 90 or beyond, odds are he will indeed one day be King. . .

In watching the relentless coverage of the Jubilee this morning, the Queen seems to be getting around alright, but she is clearly fragile and aged.

I predict if Phil goes, she will be right behind him within months.

I think there is something about the King can't be divorced, which Charles is, so he may be bypassed in favor of his son.

Really?  I've heard of no such thing.  I thought the monarchy had a rich history in divorce going all the way back to when Henry VIII said  :finger01: to the Pope when he wanted to dump Catherine of Aragon and hook up with Anne Boleyn.  As a matter of fact, the Anglican church (of which the reigning British monarch is the head) owes its very existence to divorce.

As for poor Anne Boleyn, she was eventually replaced by Jane Seymour.  Rumor has it her spirit still roams the Tower of London most likely looking for her head.

Queen Elizabeth's uncle gave up the throne because he could not marry Wallis Simpson because she was divorced. Maybe the rules are different from when Henry was King.  :) Did he divorce his wives? I thought he had his marriages annulled or just beheaded them for treason.

I don't know, but he chopped  :behead: one wife's head off to get rid of her.  Her name was "ANNE" Bolyn.  Sure can't do that in this day and age, but the Republicans are sure trying to put a hurt on our women with their war on women.

She was divorced. Heir to the throne cannot marry a previously
Married and divorced woman and be king. (which if true eliminates Phil because wasn't his current wife married before? Did he die or were they divorced?)

I take that last bit back. Phillip is listed as number 1 in the line by the monarchy , Debretts, and Whitakers Almanack.

I believe he abdicated  because she was a catholic.

Camilla and her husband divorced in 1995. Did you mean Charles, Phillip is Queen Elizabeth's husband.

Not a problem, I think the whole royalty thing is convoluted and confusing at best. London is having a big year, the Diamond Jubilee and the Summer Olympics!

At any rate, Charles is the Heir apparent and first in the line of succession. Another point, in 2011 Parliament was presented with several changes to the rules, one of which was to remove the marrying a catholic disqualifier. (They still cannot sit on the throne). It also removed the primogeniture that automatically passed over females in favor of males. (Not sure if these were passed but all were presented with the full approval of the sovereign Queen, which makes me think they likely sailed through).

NONE of these changes were retroactive though, so Edward's family is still disqualified due to his abdication, and if they were passed they only apply to those current in the line of succession and their heirs.

I hear it is a very festive atmosphere over there. I have a relative currently over there and she arrived from Dublin just days before the whole DJ event. I've seen a TON of pictures before during and after it and she appears to be having the time of her life. (She's on summer break from college).

Personally I was entertained for about a half an hour during the coverage of it, but the rest of the whole day of saturation of the event here in the states was more than a bit nauseating to me.
