I have a future career in the beginning thought process. In several years, I'm hoping to become an Alpaca farmer. Hubby brought the idea up tonight at dinner. He said, he thought that would be a great job for me, because I love animals, and I hate working with others. I know that sounds bad, but I'm a loner BIG TIME.

We discussed the particulars, and decided we will need to buy more land. Buying land around us, has always been our plan anyway. Hubby, wants to build an airstrip. We would also have to build a big barn for them. I said 'with heat'??,and he rolled his eyes, and said "yes, if you think we need it". I didn't ask him about central air, because I didn't think of it at the time. I don't know much about Alpacas, but I do know you can make a mint selling their wool. I think it resembles cashmere. This way, I could have animals as pets, and make money while I'm doing it. I grew up on a farm, and know alot about taking care of livestock, and I think it would be right up my alley. Hopefully, I'll be able to make this dream a reality. I guess it's something to look foreword to.

Sounds like that would be a great thing for you.  I hope you can turn it into a reality.

Whew!  Sound like a lot of work.  How many would you plan on getting?

I don't know a whole lot about Alpacas, either.  Guess it's time for Dex to sit down and do the research.

Can you eat them or are they just bred for the wool?
If you don't have anything nice to say then come over here and sit by me!

:spooked: Eat them?  :spooked: Oh hell no!!! I suppose a person could eat them, but I would sell the wool. They're waaaay too cute to kill. They resemble a Llama. I don't know how many I would start out with, but I think it would be neat to breed them, and have baby Alpacas. It's in the very early thought stages right now. Just tumbling some ideas around.

Well, I don't know about these things! I remember when the emu craze was all over the place.  Everyone was raising them for the meat, feathers and oil.  Then the craze just fizzled and people started to release the emus in the woods.
They can be really mean and have a nasty bite.  Don't think the alpacas do that, though.  Maybe just a nasty spit or two

I don't know if Alpacas are mean or not. I do know that llamas are very mean, and you're right they do spit. Llamas are used at junkyards instead of dogs, to protect the property. Llamas can be a hell of a lot meaner, than even the meanest junkyard dog. In my area they use Llamas, and donkeys to protect the sheep herds. We have a severe problem with coyotes out here. We've got cow, and sheep herds all around us, and 3 hog confinements in a 1 mile stretch. I know more about Llamas, but Alpaca wool can make you a mint. Emus are ornery devils, hey spit too, and they charge at you. They have NO fear.  :spooked:

They're ugly before they're pissed--problem is you never know when that's gonna be with the emus!

I took Sadie to the vet to get her spayed and all her shots and stuff, and Dr. Billy (that's the vet--MEOW--he's got these blue-green eyes you can just fall into!) .......ummm where was I?

Oh yeah!  Dr. Billy has a couple of emus roaming around and Sadie took one look at that hideous thing and started whimpering and tried to crawl back into the car!  Luckily, I had my umbrella to defend us against the evil poultry!
