Associated Press:  Dunkin' Donuts pulls Rachael Ray ad after complaints

I'm posting the entire article because excerpts can't do it justice.

BOSTON —
Dunkin' Donuts has pulled an online advertisement featuring Rachael Ray after complaints that a fringed black-and-white scarf that the celebrity chef wore in the ad offers symbolic support for Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The coffee and baked goods chain said the ad that began appearing online May 7 was pulled over the past weekend because "the possibility of misperception detracted from its original intention to promote our iced coffee."

In the spot, Ray holds an iced coffee while standing in front of trees with pink blossoms.

Critics, including conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, complained that the scarf wrapped around her looked like a kaffiyeh, the traditional Arab headdress. Critics who fueled online complaints about the ad in blogs say such scarves have come to symbolize Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The kaffiyeh, Malkin wrote in a column posted online last Friday, "has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant (and not-so-ignorant) fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

A statement issued by Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin' Brands Inc., however, said the scarf had a paisley design, and was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot.

"Absolutely no symbolism was intended," the company said.

Dunkin' spokeswoman Michelle King said the ad appeared on the chain's Web site, as well as other commercial sites.

Malkin, in a posting following up on last week's column, said of Dunkin's decision to pull the ad, "It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists."

Ray, host of the Food Network television program "30 Minute Meals" as well as a syndicated daytime talk show, began appearing in ads for Dunkin' Donuts in March 2007. When Dunkin' announced the partnership, it said Ray would be featured in TV, print, radio and online spots in a campaign running through 2010.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME???  Do people like Michelle Malkin have anything better to do than look at what kind of scarf someone is wearing in a goddamn DONUT COMMERCIAL?

And shame on Dunkin Donuts for rolling over to this ridiculous argument.  They should have issued a statement telling Malkin and her ilk that they are selling FUCKING DONUTS and SHUT THE FUCK UP!

There are bigger issues in this country like the price of gas and housing costs and education and this is what Malkin wants us to focus on?  Oh, that's right.  The people Malkin supports got us into those messes, so she would rather us not focus on them.  So, she needs to create a distraction.  And Rachael Ray just happened to be wearing A SCARF!  IN A DONUT COMMERCIAL!  SHOOT THE BITCH!

Because the people that run Dunkin Donuts obviously don't have the gonads to back the people who create and appear in their advertising, I don't feel the need to support their stores.  That includes Baskin-Robbins.

In the words of Casey Kasem:  "Ponderous man, fucking ponderous."

this has to be about the most absurd thing Ive ever heard of...

There isnt a woman out there, whose climate dictates it, that doesnt have some sort of fringed scarf. Hell, I think I have a few.

Locutus

You have to consider that this is coming from a woman who ingratiated herself to conservative circles by basically stating that Japanese concentration camps in the US during WWII were justified and should be done again with Muslims.

I think someone should throw the damn bitch in jail for looking at me all slanty eyed.  ;D

I saw this news story and my reaction was pretty much the same. WTH?!? Do you think that the majority of the average Americans would have looked at the scarf and made the same connection? I seriously doubt it.

I agree, there are other places to get donuts and ice cream. I can't believe they'd go along w/this insanity, although I think it's just another example of the different types of fear the "War on Terror" has caused.

I normaly like her articles..........(no surprise there, huh).......but, off the cuff.........I think I gotta go along with C91's comments........

first of all.......to me..Rachel Ray seems very naive and it is just a goofey, good-lookin girl who can cook her butt off........I can't imagine her trying to make any sort of political statement in any way shape or form..........

I think DD is getting plenty of press time................now they need to say the same thing the C said..........and say it was a commercial.......with NO political statement.........and move on.

I doubt the average American has ever even heard of a keffiyah, and if they have they are smart enough to realize its usually worn by a man, and usually wrapped about the head.

Would it have been ok if a big butt copper was wearing it and doing the commercial?

Is there no depth to which these cesspool-dwelling sludge worms won't sink for the purpose of trying to smear people?

I gotta agree, Bo.

I'm average and yes I had no idea what a keffiyah was and I don't know if I could say it correctly either.

I love my Dunkin Donut munchkins!  They are the bomb!  Oh wait!  Should I change my wording?  Someone might think Dunkin Donut Munchkins support the terrorist!  How about They are the shit!
