Quote from: Purplelady1040 on April 20, 2014, 08:00:38 PMThey could apply themselves and get off their lazy asses and work hard also. It is like I said welfare was not meant to be a crutch and people are making it that way...I have no use for people who don't want to work for things and want a hand out...

Once again, PL, don't take this personal.  I just find a couple of your remarks to be good starting off places for new topics of discussion.

Other than the above quoted comment leaving the impression of the old 'welfare queen' propaganda from the Ronnie Ray-gun era that has long, and often, been proved fallacious, a primary problem with 'welfare' is that the U.S. would barely need it if we didn't have such an obsessive religious devotion to Capitalism - especially Laissez-Faire, unregulated, 'free market' Capitalism.

In our devotion to such, all we've done is ensure the end result of a two-tiered society consisting of the haves and the have-nots.  A society that is failing further economically by the day.

We, as a political society, have stepped away from the realization that it is the worker - Labor - who creates value, and NOT the owner - Capital.  Until we decide to value Labor and stop the unwarranted upward mobility of assets to Capital, Labor - which is YOU - will fall further and further behind economically.

History shows us that when a society stratifies economically as ours is doing, it creates conditions where there is no incentive to be productive - only the incentive to get yours however you can, which leads to crime and other further deteriorations of society.

America also has this love of anarchy.  America doesn't call it that, America calls it 'rugged individualism', 'self-sufficiency', or some other such crap.  What that means is that America - and especially the RW as evidenced by their core 'values' and political goals - doesn't really value society.  It shows.  It shows in that concept "we have ours, tough shite for you" that is oh so American.  Until we can decide we are a society, and not just a crowd of individual greedy lunatics, and assure everyone has the economic ability and opportunity to benefit from this country's largesse, the economic and societal conditions in this country are only going to degrade for those not in the upper 1%.

Is that the way you want to run a country?

So what is your answer?  Is it to let the government run everything?  How is that working out for the USPS?  Just how efficient is government really when it comes to running a business?

Hard to say what the answer is and I have no problems with some people getting welfare- but the problem, I have is those regardless of race because I know some will say well blacks get more welfare but that isn't true. My problem is those who get it who show up driving the latest vehicle, the ladies have their nails and hair done, got the latest name brand clothes and then want to pay for all their groceries with welfare. If you can afford all those things, you can easily go sling hamburgers and work.

Sorry PL, but that sounds suspiciously like Ronnie Ray-gun's piece of propaganda misrepresenting a real-life criminal - and I do mean criminal.

Here's her real story - as with Capone, the government could only send her to prison for something other than her real crimes:

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/history/2013/12/linda_taylor_welfare_queen_ronald_reagan_made_her_a_notorious_american_villain.html

The Welfare Queen
In the 1970s, Ronald Reagan villainized a Chicago woman for bilking the government. Her other sins—including possible kidnappings and murders—were far worse.

Oh and by the way, 'welfare' as it was commonly known actually ended in 1996 with the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act which changed the benefit structure to a five-year lifetime limit on cash assistance.

If you have seen anything remotely like what you have related, I will guarantee you that those women "who show up driving the latest vehicle, the ladies have their nails and hair done, got the latest name brand clothes" aren't acquiring those things through 'welfare', they're the spoils of criminal enterprises.

I seen a woman do what PurpleLady says she seen,  come to find out she owned a beauty shop and she took food stamps to fix welfare women's hair.     Yes she was the criminal who defrauded the government.
