I think he uses the "research it yourself" line as part of the act. He wants to establish creditability the cheap way. He know his target audience isn't typically comprised of researchers. They're thinking to themselves, "He wouldn't tell us to look it up if there was a chance that he was wrong or twisting", so they don't bother.

People who research typically do it without being prompted. He doesn't think his target audience is that type.
