Read an interesting opinion piece on CNN yesterday morning very early. It contains the real unemployment numbers and how, when equated with the available jobs, the odds of obtaining a job are against you. . .
Quote
"Adding part-time workers to the number of officially unemployed and the discouraged workers, as labor market expert Leo Hindery, Jr., has observed, results in a rise in the real unemployment rate to 19.2 percent, or 30.6 million people.

The odds of any one of these 30 million securing one of the 2.4 million full-time jobs available is 8 percent, the same as the admissions rate of the Ivy League gold standard, Harvard University.

The 3.5 million jobs the stimulus package aims to provide are insufficient. To get the job growth the country needs, the White House should push for sustained infrastructure investment, cutting corporate taxes, and increasing access to credit for small businesses. We still have thirty million workers in the United States who are unemployed, underemployed or discouraged and they face the same odds of finding a job as a high school senior applying to the world's most elite university.
"

Kind of feeds into my posting elsewhere in this forum about the stimulus money. . .

I want to be clear about what my intentions are surrounding that posting, since some may want to take it as a criticism of the POTUS or his administration. It is not meant to be that.

My position in all of this is to elicit accountability at the local level surrounding where the money is being spent, how it is being spent, and who is responsible for doing the spending.

Thus far we've seen a total of 12 jobs created with 20,000,000 dollar of stimulus funds/grants having been distributed to the Anderson area, the city itself, and a small handful of business entities. That equates to $1,666,666.67 per job created/saved! Moreover, there were grants distributed to insulate elderly, low income homes, purchase law enforcement equipment, and to bolster the educational system of this city, yet our tax bills reflect nothing but increases for ongoing expenses within these areas.

Are the homes being insulated? And who is deciding which homes get insulated?

The school system received in excess of 11 million dollars, yet we still see school closures, layoffs, and zero jobs saved or created. Why? What is being done with the money?

Law enforcement received over 1.5 million dollars for the purchase of 4x4's, k-9 vehicles, and multi-launchers. Has this stuff been purchased? Do we really need 40mm multi-launchers and if so what is the purpose of them? (Afraid the masses are going to revolt against the oppressive methods being utilized to fleece them?)

Do we really get so much snow here that 4x4 vehicles are a necessary expense???

The questions go on and on, yet no answers are readily available to any one of us. Why?

As I've said before, I support the stimulus initiative and I want to see it succeed or fail on its own merit. I just do not trust local level government to do the right things!

and my point is not JUST directed at the POTUS, because the corruption of such bills or any stimulus, begins with the local level....it is THIS kind of BS, that will make such a stimulus FAIL....

The response I received from WV state governor's office was that most of the economic stimulus money was being spent to replenish money cut in areas.  I didn't see any real use of the money to create new jobs.

exactly right!!!...as far as that goes, on a national level needs to be a part of our duties also...I think people in general have been WAY too apathetic to what is going on.

Yes, certainly goes against the intent.

Not if those areas being cut were to cost jobs that have been saved by the influx of cash.
