Does anybody have any experience with VMWare and Microsoft SQL Server 2008?

I am getting conflicting reports from the VMWare and MSDN community forums.

SQL Server 2008 doesn't show up in the compatibility list at VMWare and Microsoft says SQL 2008 requires Hyper V.

Yet I have seen a claim or two (but no explanations) that it will work.

Also, I need a virus protection scheme for VMWare. Despite Symantec's claims, their product simply does not work. It hangs up the server in a virtual environment.

Please help! I am at my wits end on this problem.

I sent this to a friend of mine who works at Microsoft.  We'll see if he has any light to shed on the subject.

Here was his reply.  Doesn't appear to be much help.

I'm not really familiar with VMware's in and outs, but Hyper-V is a different thing.  So he can run SQL in a virtualized environment under Hyper-V but that is using MICROSOFT virtualization technology, NOT VMware.  Your hardware also has to be Hyper-V enabled.  As for anti-virus, we use CA eTrust here.  Try seeing if they have something for SQL here:

Thanks!!!!

Maybe it did help. I had forgotten about the CA products for virus protection.

But my buddies at MS told me essentially the same thing about Hyper V.

Problem is, we have a client who insists he wants VMWare and he wants to run his Great Plains accounting in a virtual environment. He is somewhat knowledgeable technically, but he thinks he knows more than he does.

I guess I am really looking for docs to use as ammo against his ideas. The guy is super stubborn.

Well....problem solved. Sort of.

Through trial and error, we got SQL to work under VMWare. But heaven help us if we ever need future support.

As for the Symantec problem, we convinced the customer to let us put it on a box outside the virtual server.

Many, many, many thanks to Locutus and "me" for their great help!
