Two things - I am not comfortable with ANY group who wants equal treatment by pushing their agenda into public schools.  It doesn't allow any such group to be looked upon as equal but special since we have to take special measurements ie: placing certain books in the classroom, have tolerance classes, afterschool groups, etc... HOWEVER, I do agree that children are the first to overlook things about each other that us stubborn adults can't or won't.  I don't think that is something that is out right taught in school, but more of a social adaptation that all kids go through while placed in a situation where people are not always like themselves.  We do have more classes and lessons on character traits, but I think that is because they took the Golden Rule out of school and had to replace it with something more PC.

I agree with most of your point.  School should be for an education and not a political football.  However, I think the guidelines don't do anything more than tell teachers they can't just write off whole groups of students because the teachers "don't like those kind".  I also don't think anyone "took the golden rule" out of school.  We just no longer promote a mystical version of that.  Kids learn the golden rule on the basis of common human decency, as you pointed out, as well.

Most people (notice I said most) that go into teaching are not the kind of people who "write off" groups of people because we don't like their kind.  We like all kinds and that is why we teach and others don't.
Take time to smell the roses.

Agree.  It is like everything else; only takes a few to cause the problem and cause the "rules" to be laid down.  I am sure most laws on the books don't pertain to most of us.
