can be a hard thing to raise.  Our society discards older women.  I found that out right away when I lived on my own for a year.   We aren't even noticed.  But you overcome that when you start demanding to be heard and not putting up with being invisible.  the US is not kind to the elderly, but much more unkind to older women.
