I wonder? ....

Does anyone think that the Internet is causing (or at least facilitating) this behavior?

If by the 'internet' you mean the things that promote the sick narcissism so prevalent in the 'internet' age, then I'll agree with you and put forth a resounding "yes!"

It's helped create a mass of people who never evolve past the 'me, and what I want' stage.

A little side tale from my decades of internet - and social media - experience...

I always understood that there were narcissists, sociopaths/psychopaths, and other mental/social misfits and mentally/emotionally stunted people in society, but labored under the faulty assumption they were a minute segment of our society...

How wrong I was!

With the trappings of social niceties present from face to face contact removed by the internet, the faces of a multitude of those sick and stupid people were exposed on social media - and it became obvious that they are a FAR greater proportion of the populace than I - or probably anyone - imagined.

Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.  ;)

"You've probably noticed that opinion pollsters go out of their way to include as many morons as possible in surveys ... I think it's dangerous to inform morons about what their fellow morons are thinking. It only reinforces their opinions. And the one thing worse than a moron with an opinion is lots of them." -- Scott Adams

In other words: Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  ;)

"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." -- Upton Sinclair

"Hitler is gone, but if the majority of our fellow citizens are more susceptible to the slogans of fear and race hatred than to those of peaceful accommodation and mutual respect among human beings, our political liberties remain at the mercy of any eloquent and unscrupulous demagogue." -- S. I. Hayakawa

So ... in a nutshell   ...

The Internet isn't necessarily causing this behavior. It is merely exposing it.

I like that answer!
