Here we go again with Malaysia Airlines:

(CNN) -- A Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agency Interfax reported Thursday.

Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it lost contact with MH17, and the flight's last known position was over Ukrainian airspace, the airline said on Twitter.

The jet is a Boeing 777, according to Interfax.

The plane reportedly went down near the border between Russia and Ukraine.

A Malaysian Airlines passenger plane with 295 aboard was shot down by a surface-to-air missile in Ukraine near the Russian border, according to multiple reports.

The airline, the same one whose plane disappeared over the Indian Ocean in March, confirmed only that "an incident" had occurred involving the Boeing 777, which was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.

"Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam," read a tweet from the airline. "The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow," read a tweet from Malaysia Airlines' account.

Multiple reports said the plane was shot down at cruising altitude. Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister told The Associated press that the plane, carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew people onboard, was shot down.

Gerashenko says on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet when it hit Thursday by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.

Holy shit!!! :spooked: :spooked:

I didn't think those surface to air missiles were capable of reaching to 33,000 feet.

Some of them can reach even further if I remember correctly. This is horseshit!

Yeah, I was just doing some research and those missiles fired from that type of launcher can reach as high as 70,000 feet.  :spooked:

I can't believe airlines would even fly through airspace where surface to air combat is going on anyway.  It would seem to me that airspace would be easily avoided, and should be avoided at all costs while hostilities are underway.

Total agreement on that one.

US officials have confirmed that it was shot down by a missile.

Tragic targeting of innocent human beings by asshats intent upon killing. . . I don't care which side of that conflict did the deed.

Yeah that's awful, but I still question why airlines were using that route with all of the shit going on.  Seems like they should have been circumnavigating that whole area.

US airlines had been instructed to avoid the airspace, however there was no overall restriction placed upon it. . . Which is absolutely astounding given the number of military flights that have already been targeted and shot down within it. . .

In actuality this was a false statement, since US aircraft were indeed restricted, but only within an area south of the one in which the airliner was shot down yesterday. That has been corrected though with a newly expanded restriction for US aircraft including the area to the north.

It's Malasyia Air, they apparently don't keep up with the news. I did hear that they had flown that route 24 times in the last month so I guess they thought it was safe.
