Do you believe there's golbal warming and why. If yes, what's the cause.

The Troll

Well, I like science and have heard many reasons for and against.  What's your real thought on it.  Plus what should we do about it.

I got some of my own ideas and I want the people in The Unknown Zone thinks about it.

PARIS, Feb. 2 — In a bleak and powerful assessment of the future of the planet, the leading international network of climate change scientists has concluded for the first time that global warming is "unequivocal" and that human activity is the main driver, "very likely" causing most of the rise in temperatures since 1950.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/02/science/earth/02cnd-climate.html?_r=1&ref=science

▪   Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.
▪   Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic (human) greenhouse gas concentrations.
▪   Anthropogenic warming and sea level rise would continue for centuries due to the timescales associated with climate processes and feedbacks, even if greenhouse gas concentrations were to be stabilized, although the likely amount of temperature and sea level rise varies greatly depending on the fossil intensity of human activity during the next century (pages 13 and 18).[41]
▪   The probability that this is caused by natural climatic processes alone is less than 5%.
▪   World temperatures could rise by between 1.1 and 6.4 °C (2.0 and 11.5 °F) during the 21st century (table 3) and that:
▪   Sea levels will probably rise by 18 to 59 cm (7.08 to 23.22 in) [table 3].
▪   There is a confidence level >90% that there will be more frequent warm spells, heat waves and heavy rainfall.
▪   There is a confidence level >66% that there will be an increase in droughts, tropical cyclones and extreme high tides.
▪   Both past and future anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions will continue to contribute to warming and sea level rise for more than a millennium.
▪   Global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide have increased markedly as a result of human activities since 1750 and now far exceed pre-industrial values over the past 650,000 years
In IPCC statements "most" means greater than 50%, "likely" means at least a 66% likelihood, and "very likely" means at least a 90% likelihood.

December 26, 2004 an earthquake measuring 9 on the "moment" scale (modified Richter scale) hit Indonesia. This earthquake was so large it made an impact upon the earth's rotational axis; driving a "wobble" that in all likelihood continues to some degree to this day. What affect did it have upon the earth's path around the sun? Who really knows?

Instead of pointing fingers at each other shouldn't we be looking to science to answer the question surrounding root cause, instead of "who" caused? Certainly humankind is negatively impacting the earth on many levels, but if you are of the religious nature didn't the creator say the earth was ours to use? If you are not religious then I'd ask, who caused the ice age??

The point is I suspect we are experiencing the earths natural progression/digression process, and scientists are sometimes a bit too quick to point the finger when data is limiting the scope of the "picture" they are viewing.

Those who take the extremist "green" approach should look to their own house before criticizing in some cases. What about the cars you drive? Yes, they may be electrically operated but what about the materials utilized to construct them? Plastic, metal, copper; man-made substances that are produced utilizing processes that (in your view) are killing the earth. How about the paper you write upon and read, and finish nature's call with? Are you aware of how much water and chemicals are used to produce it?

And digressing; just what affect do you suppose this wobble has had upon the climatic conditions globally? Some ancient religions and sects predicted the end of the earth will transpire in 2012; and there are theories within the earth science community that say the earths core will experience a significant drop in rotational velocity coincidentally in this same year, negatively impacting the earths rotation and inner-core magnetic field to the point where all navigational instrumentation will be rendered useless. What affect will these things have (and are we seeing them have even now) upon the earths climate? (In recent geologic history it may have switched direction about every 200,000 years. ) Read the Orion Prophecy.

As AWOL alludes to, and to a point I agree, science doesn't have a large enough window of data to conclusively say that humankind is the direct cause of the negatives we are seeing. Contributing, or accelerating factors, perhaps. How are we to know whether or not the things we are experiencing aren't just the natural progression of things somewhat accelerated by the byproducts of humankinds activities? And if the Mayan's were right does any of this really matter anyway?  http://www.greatdreams.com/2012.htm

Rather than cover old ground I thought it wise to provide some of the links to information previously utilized in this very topic, by yours truly and some others:

Summary

To me I believe that global warming is indeed a reality, and while science can prove and disprove this theory today, what that proves to me is we don't really know why its happening; but the glaciers are disappearing, along with other climatic events that clearly document that it is indeed happening. Maybe not at the rate(s) some predicted, or with the rapid changes predicted, but it is happening.

Why is it happening? That is the magic question now isn't it? The potential causes run the across the boards from natural cyclic events to human cause. Myself, I believe it to be mixture of both; perhaps with human drivers accelerating the timeline for what is a natural process.

As previously speculated upon earlier, humankind has only been on the face of this earth for a very short window of it existence.  (Comparatively) However, science enables us to accurately extrapolate things like climate, foliage, etc., from the sedimentary record, geological record, fossil record, ice, etc. content of the earth, and while some may engage in puffery in order to sully said studies, empirical evidence supports them.

I believe it is indeed a problem, and much like any other problem humanity wants to run about denying it until the very last possible moment. In this case however, procrastination will not enable us to undo the damage humanity has done in 100,000 years overnight; and it is indeed upon the eve of the end when you will finally get those who remain in denial to agree it is a problem. . .

The Troll

WOW, WOW, WOW,  I just ask a question that I thought would get some half baked answers from the Loony Right.

My god,  Palehorse comes in with a 16 inch naval cannon and blows the people who don't believe there's there is such a thing global warming, clear out of the water.

Palehorse's post was like a scientific thesis on global warming.  His answer was what I believed.  I sure will be interested in what someone has to say, that challenges Palehorse statements.

Good job, Palehorse.  The Troll.   :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I'm a believer but my whole thing is this, even if you think it is a crock of shit, shouldn't you still be taking care of the Earth anyway?  Shouldn't we learn how to use energy sources that we won't run out of?  Isn't it a good thing to save the polar bears?
Take time to smell the roses.
