Title: Natural Instinct
Post by: BEG on October 20, 2006, 12:23:31 PM
Sometimes (mostly in the Fall) I become amazed by animals instinct such as birds flying south and squirrels gathering nuts.
Now I know it's because the weather is cooler, but how do the birds know which way it's warm (or south)?
Also how does a dog's fur know when to fill in and when to shed?
Regardless I'm comforted to know that each animal knows instinctively how to take care of itself.

What amazes me are those little humming birds....the litte fellas hang around my dads house from spring until about September...then the little farts, from what I have read, will fly to Mexico every winter......why Mexico?...why not Texas?...but they do, then they will return every spring.....kind of wild...

I think all living things have instinct.  We look for warmth when cold and cool when hot.  Other animals are no different.  Tempurature changes cause us to adapt and seek shelter.  Dogs and cats grow and lose fur when seasons change.  We have an older cat and dog that don't spend as much time outside as they use to.  Their coats are more consistant through the year then the other dog and cats.  Since they stay in where the temp is controlled via thermostat, their bodies don't react as severe as the others.  I'm sure the birds migrate due to similar changes in the weather patterns as well.  The flocks have been going back and forth for years, so the younger ones follow the crowd to survive.  Eventualy the young birds become the older leaders and train the new ones to follow along.  They probably have a finer tuned instinct to the weather than we do since they spend all of their time in the outdoors.  Man couldn't fly and cover distances like a bird, so we learned to seek shelter and cover up.

I work by a nice open area and there are trees behind the building so we have a lot of squirrels around.
It's funny that normally they are running around, up and down the trees, but today they are very seriously working at gathering food for the upcoming season.
I am enjoying watching them today with all their determination to collect the nuts and whatever else they need.
