I just realized that I don't have a thread dedicated to my Chinese Pug, Pugsly. Pugsly, is my little China Man. He was born in April of 1996. We got him in June of 1996. I had some extra money, and decided to go shopping. I went to the pet store just to look around, and had no intentions of buying any pets. I was standing there, looking at puppies through the glass, they were playing in their little cages, and in one of the cages in the back, all I could see were these little shiny eyes, looking out of the dark. One of the helpers walked by, and I said to him,"What kind of puppie is in that back cage, all I can see is eyes." He says " that's a baby Pug", no sooner than he got those words out, that puppie came barreling to the front of his cage. Our eyes met, and I just had to hold that puppie. I asked the worker "Could you bring him out so I can hold it?" He said "Sure" and I held him ,and it was love at first sight. I wanted him soooo bad, and my husband said 'oh, you don't want that spastic thing, do you? I think you better think it over? Lets do some other shopping ,and if you still think you want it, we'll go back." Well, my mind was already made up. I told the guy ,we'll definitely be back to get him. So, 2 hours later I purchased a Pug.
Pugs are very loyal and lovable dogs. Pugsly has learning disabilities, because he was from a puppy mill. At the time that we got Pugsly, we didn't know the circumstances. We could never teach him anything, he just didn't get anything, we were trying to teach him. Two years later, there was a big scandal, involving the pet store I bought him from, buying all of their puppies from a puppy mill in Iowa. Pugsly, had papers, and he is a purebred Pug, but he is the product of inbreeding. It didn't matter to me, because he was a major part of my life by then, and I wouldn't have traded him for 10 normal Pugs.
He's really started to show his age in the last few months. He's mostly deaf, and somewhat blind, and his little mug is getting quite grey. He's also lost some of his teeth along the way. He's become extremely picky about what he will eat. He likes that Cesar moist food, and if I'd let him, he'd probably eat a six pack of it a day LOL!!! He can be a little pig sometimes. He wont eat anything else. I give him 4 packs a day. It is not cheap by any means, a 12 pack costs $8 at Walmart. It takes at least 2-12 packs a week. I don't begrudge him that, he's been a faithful friend, and he deserves only the best.
On this thread, I'll post a little bit about Pugsly's day to day life. I would also like to hear some stories about my fellow Zoners pets too.
I've just put Pugsly outside, and he looks cold already. He's had his breakfast so, I had to practically drag him out of his pen. Recently, mornings have been a little rough for Pugsly. Right now, he's sitting one the deck, staring off into space, with his tongue hanging out of his mouth. I better go get him, and bring him in, it's only 25* out side. He'll probably be ready for his nap.
Yeah, let that baby inside girl!
When it gets cold we let Angie--my Chessie--in cuz her hip dysplasia gets very aggravated by the cold--poor thing can hardly get up it hurts her so!
We give her some doggie glucosamine but I don't know if it helps or not---
Getting cold now--I'm gonna go get my big baby and make her bed up for her!

Pugsly has a lot of trouble getting up, and down the stairs. Sometimes, he can't do it at all, and I have to lift him up. Sometimes, that's hard because he's a little porker LOL!!! He is somewhat obese. We just let him have what he wants, he's getting old ,and sometimes he lays in his pen, with his eyes open when he's asleep. It scares me to death that one morning, I'll go to feed him, and he'll be gone. I can't even deal with that thought. So, we spoil him, and let him have whatever food he wants. And, he has an abundance of toys to chew on, and play with. One thing I've had trouble with is a dog bed for him. Everytime I buy him a dog bed he chews it up, and destroys it. I think he may even eat it sometimes. :spooked: I've caught him with big mouthsful of cotton batting before. I always dig it out of his mouth, and throw the bed away. If you try to wash and sew them, you get a bigger mess. Mostly, he sleeps on a rag rug, he doesn't destroy those LOL!!!
That's exactly why I won't buy Benji a doggie bed. I had bought one for the lab, she's elderly, she'll be turning 12 in a few days about 6 years ago...until then...she was liable to chew it up too. Before that, I had piled blankets for her to sleep on, which she'd chew on and I'd just replace them. Then I noticed she wasn't chewing on them anymore...I bought the bed. Benji was a few months old when he completely shredded her bed. So...It's blankets for him...until he gets it.

I don't know why they destroy stuff like that? Pugsly also destroys his cloth toys too. Then again, Pugsly does do strange things on occasion LOL!!! Poor little stinker. He is sooo out of it all the time. One morning a couple of weeks ago he did a good one. I was walking him around the yard, it was pretty early and I struggled to get him awake, to begin with. We were walking along in the backyard, and we were just about to this little blue spruce, I planted last Summer, it's about a foot tall. I figured since it was eye level, Pugsly would go around it, nope he just crashed right into it, and got tangled up. I couldn't stop laughing ,because it caught me off guard. I said "Jesum Crow!!! Are you alright?" He just stood there in the spruce, looking dazed and confused. I had to pull him out of it. He didn't get hurt, and there was no damage to the tree. His memory is sooo bad, he can't remember that he's coming in from pottying, not going out. LMAO!!! It just gets worse all the time.
Awww--poor baby!!
No wonder you let him have anything he wants

I picked up some more Cesar for him today. Right now, he's sitting out on the deck, getting some sun. :smitten: He always looks soooo sweet, and innocent. There is not a mean bone in his little body. I have seen him nip at the cats, if they tried to eat his food. They don't understand... you don't mess with the Pugmister's food. :spooked:

I'll have to break his arm to get that done.
I don't have a problem with that
Can I help?
I meant w/the pictures...not breaking hubby's arm. ( I know what you were thinking)

:sneaky: ;D I'll have to find some, and maybe take some current ones. I have a small picture of him, in a locket keychain I have. When somebody asks me if I have children, I whip it out and say "This is my boy." They always laugh, and fawn over how cute he is. :smitten:
Tonight, when I was taking Pugsly out to potty, he missed the last step, and crashed face, and shoulder first, into the brick foundation of the house. :spooked: It scared me to death, because he hit it HARD. My first thought was... OMG did he break his shoulder? :spooked: My second thought was ... did he hurt his face? :spooked: My third thought was... how the hell did he do that? :spooked: It was dark when we started out the door, about the time I flipped the light switch, is when he missed the last step. So, he must've thought he was on the last step, and jumped down, not realizing he was on the second from the bottom step. Needless to say, he is OK. He's had wipe outs like this before, many, many, many times. I'm trying to talk hubby in to building a little ramp for him, because he has problems with steps. The fact that he is obese doesn't help much either.
Pugsly has been giving me fits. Right now he is never satisfied with anything. I never thought of it, but my Mom says he's spoiled LOL! He doesn't want to stay indoors, and he doesn't want to be outdoors. He's finicky about what he'll eat, and most of the time, he snubs his dog food, and tries to eat the cat's canned food. A couple of nights ago we woke me up at 2:45 am, at first I thought he was having a little tantrum, but he did have to go potty. As soon as I brought him back in from pottying, he sat in his kennel, and kept barking. Dex was not amused!!! I walked out there, and bent down, and looked him square in the eyes, and said "Pugsly if you don't shut the f up, I'm gonna give you something to howl about." Needless to say, I never heard another peep out of him the rest of the night. A pet owner can be abrasive without being abusive. The tone of voice is all it takes sometimes.
Well, the Pugman is having some pretty serious health issues. In recent weeks he has really begun to slow down. He hasn't been eating very good, and hasn't had much strength. Last night, he had a pretty bad spell, where he couldn't breathe. He's a little better today, but I don't think he's long of this world. I've been trying to brace myself, but it's gonna be a hard one. I've had Pugsly since he was 9 weeks old and he is 12 now. He's been a good and loyal companion, and I hope he's gonna stick around a while longer.
