Title: Maddie
Post by: Dexter Morgan on November 10, 2007, 10:53:41 PM
Well, I have another animal rescue project. Last Wednesday a kitten crawled out from my deck. It had had some sort of eye injury. It's right eye was protruding off it's face, about an inch and a half. It looked like a mutant from another planet. Of course I picked it up to look at it. It was struggling around, and the eye popped open, and started bleeding profusely. I ran in to the house and called the vets office, and got it there immediately. They said the eye would have to be removed, and it would cost about $400. I said "Do it". They were soo busy they weren't able to do the surgery that day, so they did it Thursday, and so far everything is going well. The kitten is a little girl, and her estimated age is 5 weeks. We named her "Maddie".Right now she has sutures in half of her face, they have to be removed in ten days. This morning I was concerned, because she was very congested in her head. So, I called and they said for me to continue with the antibiotics, they sent home with her. I've started her on a bottle, and she is eating Kitten Chow, and some canned food too. She seems to be doing well. She follows me everywhere I go. The gals at the vets office told me she cried incessantly, until somebody would pick her up and hold her. On the ride home she got really mad because, I wouldn't let her out of the carrier in the car. I'm quite sure she was cussing me out LOL!!!  :spooked: Anyway, I've got a new little friend, and I'll keep everybody updated on her progress.

Here's an update on Maddie.....

Today, Maddie is a little bit more quiet than she has been. She's sleeping more than she had been. And I think she may have a fever. I'm keeping her antibiotics on schedule, that is an ordeal all it's own LOL!!! I have to be REAL careful with anything involving her face, because half of it is stitched. I have to pry her mouth open, to give her her medicine, and she is very adamant, about keeping her mouth clamped shut. I always have a warm bottle ready, to wash the medicine taste away, so she gets over it pretty fast LOL!!! She has wanted the bottle more today. I don't think she was weened at all but, I didn't have a choice, she had to have the surgery right away,or she would have died. So, lets hope she continues to do well. If she's still feverish in the morning I'm going to call the vet.

She's much better today T. I think the fever is gone. She seems to be less congested in her head, so that's a good sign. I'm having a hell of a time giving her her medicine though LOL!!!! She clamps her mouth shut soooo tight, it's unreal. I even had hubby help me, and it was still an ordeal  :spooked:. We've had some struggles, and spilled medicine ,but we're OK. I hate doing anything involving her face, I'm scared I'll bump her stitches, and cause her pain. So, I have to handle her real gentle, to avoid that. Tommorrow, I go back to work. Luckily, it's only a 3 hour shift. I don't want to leave her, but I have to.  She likes her bottle pretty good, and when she cries, she's sooo little, it sounds like a baby crying. She's just a little doll.

Maddie is doing great today!!!! She must have done OK while I was at work. She was asleep when I got home, and the minute she woke up, she wanted her ba ba. She loves her bottle LOL!!! I've created a monster.  :spooked: This morning at 7:00, I got woke up, by a tiny paw batting my nose. This went on until I got up at 8:30. I'd doze off and POW,  :box: I was awake again LOL!!! What a sweet way to get woke up.  :smitten: She goes back Monday to have her stitches out.

LOL!!! She is  SPOILED ROTTEN  already.  :spooked: When I got home she was asleep, all of a sudden, she came running to me, bawling her little head off. All it took was a simple phrase to make her quit crying,I said "Do you want a bottle, should we get your ba ba?" It was instantly better, until I couldn't make the bottle fast enough to suit her.  :spooked: She cried and carried on like a human baby, the whole time I was getting the bottle.  :spooked: I've had kittens that fussed for the bottle, but I've never seen one get pissed, because I wasn't making it fast enough LOL!!! I was afraid she was going to wake up hubby, and he was 3 rooms away, with a fan going LMAO!!!! Yep, she's a monster.

Tonight, I had a bad scare. Maddie suddenly collapsed, and her breathing became very labored. I took her to the vets on emergency call. She has an upper resporatory virus, and she was dehydrated. He gave her fluids, put some medicine in her nose, and gave me more antibiotics for her. I also found out that I had been over medicating her.  :spooked: When I told him the antibiotics were almost gone, he looked at me and said, "they're gone?" and I said "yeah" he says how much have you been giving her?" I said "the eye dropper full twice a day like ,the receptionest told me to". Then he asked me which one told me that, and I said I didn't know. Anyway, she was supposed to have 1/4 of the dropper, twice a day.  :spooked: He said it wouldn't hurt her. I could tell he was pissed, about the receptionist telling me that dosage. We're home now,and it only cost me $180.00. I'm just going to have to watch her real careful. I may have jumped the gun, but sure enough, if I hadn't taken her tonight, she would have gotten worse or died. Better safe than sorry.

Maddie seems to be doing better today. She woke up bawling a little bit ago. When she saw me, she started bawling for her bottle. I guess she thinks I'm the Bottle Fairy LOL!!!  Well, she's had her bottle, and I think she's headed for Sleepy Land.

She really is a fighter. I have other kittens, and last night they were playing in the living room, all of a sudden I heard one of them cry out real loud. I jumped out of my chair, because my first thought was, OMG they hurt Maddie!!! So, I ran in there like a screamin' banshee, and to my surprise, Maddie had 2 of the little toms down, beating the living day lights out of them LMAO!!!! I had to litterally pull her off both of them.  :spooked:  I think she's going to make it just fine.

Maddie is doing GREAT now!!!  She's playing and running around the house, like there is absolutely nothing  wrong with her.  It makes me feel good to see her like this.  :smitten: She gets her stitches out Monday at 11:00. That's when we find out, how the incision is healing, and kind of see how bad the scar might be. Right now it looks great. We've had no problems with it, which is a miracle in itsself. Usually, cats dig at the stitches, and try to tear them out. She hasn't even touched them. She still bawls for her bottle a lot.  And when she wants it, I have to be real quick about it because, she gets pissed real fast LOL!!!  :spooked:

Dex....a little over a year ago, my son brought me a little kitten about 8 weeks old that he had found in the weeds along side of the country road he lives on.  He took it back to his house and was gonna shoot her because he felt like she was in misery because of her constant mewing and the fact that she had a very infected eye.  He couldn't do it...so he brought her to me.  I have had her since.  Baby Girl has only one eye now, but let me tell you that doesn't stop her.  She will chase the laser light right along with all my other babies.  Of course, you have to make sure it is on her good eye side...lol.   In March 2007 she had a litter of 4 kittens.  I kept 2 of them, Notley and Dorcas, and she still plays with them.  None of my cats go outside...I have 6.  Having one eye has not stopped Baby Girl and I am sure it won't stop Maddie.

She fits in good with the others.  She'll always be an inside cat. We have a cat that only has one eye, his name is Marty. He got a fast moving infection, and we had to have it surgically removed. He does real good. He's an inside cat too. He goes out every now and then. I was fearful the other cats might be mean to him because he's different, but there haven't been any problems. Sometimes the cats will run off other cats, that they deem different than them. They gang up, and run them off. I've had that problem with my Manx cats. They have no tails, and there aren't as many of them ,as the normal tail cats. So, several of my Manx' cats have dissapeared. Cats are intriguing animals. Trying to figure out their mindset can be maddening.  LOL!!!

This is a Maddie update..... Maddie is doing really good now. I'm guardedly optimistic about her recovery. She has become very lovable recently, which is something that is a big surprise to me. Before, she never liked to be held . It's a real nice change.  We have another little kitten that is her friend. They have a great time, but Maddie gets worn out easily, and he has to entertain himself LOL!!!! I swear he literally plays until he drops. He can be running through the house, and just BAM he's out. It really is something to see.

Maddie was unable to have her distemper booster today. She has a fever and runny nose. I've got more antibiotics to give her, and she goes for a checkup a week from today. She doesn't act sick, and she's running around, and playing with Pierre. So, I'm not overly concerned at this point. She's a little toughie, and she's going to be alright.

LOL!!! They told me at the vet's office. Also, if their nose is warm and/or dry it's indicative of a fever, just like it is with dogs. She kept me up half the night, by climbing and playing in the Christmas Tree. Her and Pierre are hell on eight legs LMAO!!!! There's never a dull moment when they get together.  :spooked: It's good to see her doing sooo well.  :smitten:

Maddie went for another checkup today. She's still too congested to have her booster shot. They put her on another round of antibiotics. We're getting kind of frustrated with the vet. We think he may be stringing us along, to milk us for money. He is the top vet in our area, and he is awesome, but he's in it for the Almighty buck LOL!!!!

I had to take Maddie to the vet this morning. Last night, she was burning up with fever. This morning she was congested, and feverish. I spent $80 at the vet's, and everything is still up in the air. I have to take her back next week, and it will probably be another $80. Two weeks from that she has to go back too. Sometimes, I really think I'm being taken advantage of ,on some of this.

She has chronic upper respiratory disease. Several of my other cats have it too. She must have gotten a virus, or cold this time. It isn't fatal by any means. Chronic upper respiratory disease means, she has continual head congestion. She has a stuffy, and runny nose, and is only able to breathe through her mouth all of the time. There is no vaccination and no cure. Things like this happen when you rescue strays. My husband's cat Scooter, brought it with him when we found him, and we've had problems every since.

Seems like a lot of times, when a person tries to do good things, bad things befall them. Champ was the saddest case, because not only did she not have eyes, she brought sickness with her. She only made it 2 days shy of her first birthday, and now the other cats, have a risk of getting it too. I wouldn't change it if I could. She was a very special gift in my life. I got her soooo suddenly, I didn't have time to get her tested, to see if she had anything. She was in such a dire condition, there was no time to do anything. If I hadn't gotten her the day I did the vet said she would have been dead by the next day.

I think Maddie will be OK. She has had her first shots, and she is negative for feline Leukemia. I've got her on antibiotics. And, she's running around like a chicken with its head cut off LMAO!!!

Well, Maddie grew up soooo fast, that I didn't get her to vet to be spayed. Yep, you guessed it she's preggars.  I can't believe I let the time get away. I had the utmost intentions of getting her spayed, before she could have even 1 liter. I'm really kicking myself in the butt over this. Here's the cherry on top... Dudley Boy is the papa. I knew she was gaining a little weight, but didn't connect the dots, until Hubby said something about it. He figured it out before I did. I don't think she is super far along, but she has been eating like a pig.

Maddie is due to have her kittens anyday now. Her belly has really dropped, so I think it will probably be in the next few days. Hubby jokes that she's gonna have a dozen. Maddie had 5 kittens a week ago. They all look exactly like her. Max is the father. As soon as they're weened, Maddie is getting spayed. We don't need anymore kittens. She is an excellent mother to them. She cleans them constantly, and takes very good care of them.

That's good to hear. How's lil' one's foot?

One of Mojo's sisters is living around the corner. They look so much alike that I thought it was Mojo when she ran up on my porch one night. I brought her in the house and I knew right away, her reaction to Benji was off, then I looked under the table and there was Mojo.

Anyway, they're only a couple months old, but I fully expect her to be another one that has a litter of unwanted kittens. They let her run as she pleases outside. The lady that gave us Mojo said that those guys insisted on a girl kitten. I hope they've had her spayed.

The foot is back to normal but it's still enlarged. It does have good circulation to it now. I think that leg may be broken.  :spooked:

Maddie's kittens have their eyes open now, and are crawling around everywhere. She keeps moving them to different places in the house. Last night, she tried to stuff one of them in one of hubby's work boots LMAO!!! It looked at her like.... why are you doing this? Needless to say..... it crawled out of the boot, and went on its merry way. I caught her trying to stick one of them in my pots, and pans cupboard too.   I think she's playin' hide the kittens.

Maddie's babies are 4 weeks old now. They are extremely active. When they're out of their box, they wander all around the entire house. They resemble a tiny army. They're almost identical. The little one that had the foot injury at birth is just fine now. That foot is a little bigger than the other ones. We call him Big Foot LMAO!!! I think they've have pretty much driven Maddie insane. I had to start them on canned kitten food, because I think she's running out of milk. The minute they see me they come running ,and want me to pick them up, especially Big Foot. He jumps up and down, and tries to climb the wall to get to me LOL!!! They are soooo cute. Now, I have to figure out what I'm going to do with all of them.
