Dudley Boy is one of my cats. He is absolutely the most loving cat I've ever had. He's a special little guy. Right now Dudley is sick. It came out of the blue. He was fine and healthy one day, and sick the next. I've been really worried about him,in the past few days. As some of you know, we've had a problem with feline Leukemia this year. Dudley is 6 months old, he's been raised indoors, and he has been exposed to the disease. He's running a fever and is very congested in his head and chest. I'm going to be taking him to the vet, either today or on Monday. I was wondering if anybody might think of us when you say your prayers, because we need all the help we can get. I really hope it's not bad. Sunday, it will be exactly 1 year ago that my oldest cat(13) died from it. The vet more or less told us, that the cats would start dropping like flies. I really hope that's not true.
Oh gosh Dexter sure hope everything is ok with your cat. {{{{hugs}}}}
I lost my beloved Jasper to the damned disease so I feel ya, honey.
I'll be praying

It looks like I won't know anything until Monday. Hopefully, it isn't too serious. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks T. We never had a problem with feline Leukemia, until I rescued Champ. She was the one who was neglected and had no eyes. Six months after I got her, Kato my 13 year old got sick all of a sudden, and we spent a month and thousands of dollars, first trying to figure out what he had,and then trying to treat it. Finally after much soul searching I had him euthanized. Champ was 2 days away from her first birthday, when I had her euthanized. Both of those were the hardest thing I ever had to do. I don't regret for one minute that I rescued Champ. She was definitely one of the highlights of my life. :smitten:
I took Dudley to the vet this morning. He tested positive for Feline Leukemia. The vet did some blood work on him. He's not convinced that this illness, is related to that though. He said he may just have a cold. We're treating him with antibiotics, and we're taking a wait and see approach to it. He may get better, or he could get sicker. We just don't have any way of knowing, how it will progress. Something positive in all of this is that he's not Anemic, so he may have a better chance of kicking whatever is wrong with him. I'm not getting totally upset though, because we just don't know what is going to happen.
Oh gosh Dexter I hate to hear that. Remember that cat I told you about that had the kittens here. We found out, after the humane society had taken the kittens, that she had feline leukemia too but the kittens didn't thank goodness. Some guy the woman next door works with took her and first thing he did was take her to a vet to have her checked out was how we found out.

In a way it's very frustrating. We have no idea what is going to happen. Will he die from it? Will he get well, and 4 months from now get sick again, and possibly die? He could live a full life, but we just don't know. There is another test they can perform on him, to see if the disease is in his bone marrow. I want him to recuperate a little, before we do that test. It can help to pin point how far the disease has progressed. But there is still no way of knowing anything for 100% sure. Unfortunately, we have to play the waiting game. I'm glad I didn't wait until Monday, to take him to the vet. The crappy thing was, they charged me for an urgent care visit, which is higher than the normal office visit. He was already at the office anyway, and they are opened until noon on Saturdays. I had him there by 11:3o.
Seems like if he was open on Sat anyway you should have been charged the normal fee.
So, w/cats leukemia is contagious? Just curious, I haven't had a cat for quite a while, but I'd love to get one. Maybe someday soon....
I'm sorry that you're facing this again Dexter.

They screw people over any way they can. It could have been worse though. They've dropped their price on office visits. It was $60 just to walk in the door. Now it's $35. So that's definitely a plus.

Thanks PIYA. It is highly contagious. Champ brought it with her when I saved her. That's how we think it all got started, because none of my cats had ever had it. When I had her put to sleep, the vet told me my other cats, would start dropping like flies. Dudley is our first case in 5 months. If you decide to get a cat, get it tested, and vaccinated right away. It will save you a lot of heartbreak. BTW.... The disease is spread through bites,(cat fights) sharing the same water, and food dishes with a carrier cat,and through the liter box.
This is an update.... Dudley is doing much better today. He's up walking around, and he's eating and drinking real good. It helps more than anything when they at least eat and drink. It helps get their strength back up. I detest having to force feed them. I only do that in dire situations. I've had to do it a couple of times, usually with poor results. I do have a tube of nutritional food paste. It gives them their daily nutritional needs. It works sometimes. Right now he's on antibiotics and Lysine paste. He takes his medicine soo good. Usually, when we try to medicate a cat, we end up with minor injuries LOL!!! He really is a wonderful little cat. :smitten: I'm guardedly excited about his progress.
Another update on Dudley.... He is soo much better now. He's still a little bit congested, but it's looking pretty good so far. I'm hoping he can kick this, and get back to normal. He's definitely a fighter that's for sure. I'm really pleased with his progress.
Glad to hear he's doing better. Lets hope for a complete recovery.

Dudley is still doing pretty good. His fever is gone. He is still congested in his head. But he is much much better. Right now he's having his nightly bath, which is a great sign. He didn't groom his fur, for several days, and that is a definite sign of poor health. He takes his medicine better than any cat I've ever had. :smitten:
Thats great news Dexter. :)
 I think just maybe he is going to pull through.
Maybe he just had a virus? At any rate, I'm glad to know your boy is going to be just fine.
Thanks PIYA. Tonight, I noticed that his twin brother Oscar, has the same symptoms. Oscar is living outside. Hubby caught him peeing on the new hard wood floor in the living room, and banned him from the house. Tonight he's in the cat barn with the heat light on. It is supposed to get down to 35* here tonight. This weekend we're going to try out the space heater we installed in the cat barn. If all goes right,it should be a toasty Winter for them.
If reincarnation exists, I want to come back as one of Dexter's cats.

Hopefully, he wont have any flare ups. I'm kind of worried though, because I now have 2 sick kittens, that the Mommy abandoned. I couldn't just leave them to die, so now they are in the house, and on bottles. I took them to the vet this morning, and he gave them antibiotic shots. The smallest of the 2 is maybe 3 weeks old, and it really doesn't look good for him. He is extremely congested in the head and chest. The other one looks perfectly fine but, it has a very weird cough. It sounds like a human cough. :spooked: I held the littlest one for 12 hours straight last night, so I'm completely exhausted. Every time I put it down, it would bawl ,like it was being killed LOL!!! I hope we get some sleep tonight because, I have the early shift tommorrow.
Poor little guy's. :(
You're such a great person, Dex!
So nice to know someone who understands that our furry friends need TLC just like we do -- and they appreciate it more too
Yup--I think you're gonna go to Furry Heaven! Without the fleas and ticks

They are eating tonight so that is a good sign. It seems like we have cat problems in waves. Everything will be fine and then BAM, it all goes to hell at once LOL!!! I've spent many sleepless nights taking care of sick or dying kittens. It takes a lot out of me. The big thing is, it bugs the hell out of me when the Mommy abandons them. I know it's natural instinct, but I hate that. I do the best I can to make them as comfortable as possible. I give them the love that their Mommy wont. God I love animals. :smitten:

The smallest one acts like a crazy man when it's feeding time. I tried bottle feeding him and he wasdrinking soo fast he was choking. So, I decided to try an eye dropper. I'd give him a dropper of formula, and alternate with a dropper of a canned prescription diet watered down. It works but he goes kind of nuts when I stop to refill the dropper, and chews up the paper towel I put underhis chin as a bib. So,I switched to wrapping him in a washcloth while I feed him, now he bites down on it soo hard, I have to pry his jaws open to get the dropper in his mouth LMAO!!!! It's crazy and God help me if I don't keep my fingers tucked under. He's nailed me several times LOL!!! He really can't see much, and anything in front of his mouth is fair game LOL!!! He sure is sweet though. The other one is better, and wants to be held all the time.
I'm really not a cat person plus I'm allergic but little kittens sure cute. I know I almost became a cat person when I took care of those little kittens last year.... :smitten:

Cat allergies can be very severe. I have an aunt that is deathly allergic to cats. Her eyes swell shut, and her throat closes up. Thank God we're not close because, she could never come to my house. :spooked: I always just liked cats. Until, I got Kato. He was just the love of my life. And I've loved cats every since. He's been gone a year ago Oct.21st. Kittens have a way of growing on you fast. Cats are lovable by nature. To me there is nothing better, than sitting down after a long day (like today), and having the cats pile on to my lap. :smitten:
I'm not quite that allergic but I do break out, cough, and sneeze like crazy.
I'm just soooooooooo glad everything is working out with the kitties and the Dudmeister! WOO HOO! :milk: :catnutty: :kitty: :swish: :meow:
T. I just checked on the littlest one and he's dying. His little body is soo cold, I know he's done for. I hate this shit. He was doing soo much better. I don't know what happened. It's going to be a long night.

He didn't make it T. We had a horrible night that night. He suffered for hours. It was a nightmare. The vets in our area don't like being called in for emergencies. They charge an average of $300.00 just to see the cat, and $150 to do emergency euthanization. So, that was out of the question. I wrapped him in a baby blanket, laid down on the couch, and comforted him until 3:00, and I must have drifted off, (I was exhausted anyway) at 7:00 my alarm woke me up, and he was still laying there, but he was dead. The other one is doing good, but the past 2 nights, I've been woke up by a warm wet spot on my back LOL!!! I sleep on my stomach, and he sleeps on my back. The little turd peed on me 2 nights in a row. Tonight, he will have luxury accommodations in the bathroom LMAO!!!!!
SHIT! I just hate that! Poor little thing.......well you did all that you could do. He's in kitty heaven now, right?
Hope you stayed dry last night--LOL! :rain2:

You're not going to believe this...... The other little kitten has taken a bad turn. Last night, he was having trouble breathing, and I thought I was going to lose him. He'll be OK for a while, then he starts huffing, and puffing real hard. I think he has pneumonia, I went this morning, and got antibiotics for him. All of the vets in our area, are at a veterinary convention, so I couldn't get anybody to see him. My friend at the vet clinic put in a call, and was able to get me some antibiotics, Thank God!!! I don't know what's going to happen. I've got him an appointment for early Monday morning, if he pulls through the weekend. I think it's going to be touch and go. He seems pretty strong and he is eating, so all we can do,is wait and see. I get soo tired of the struggle with my pets all the time, that last night I just sat and bawled.

I hope so too. I don't think it could get much worse. I'm wrong on that, it could get much worse. I should be thankful it isn't worse. I need a nap LOL!!!!
The little kitten is still hanging on. I don't know how, but he is. If he could fight until tommorrow, and I could take him in, it would be great. But he's pretty far gone, so I don't have much hope.
I've got my fingers crossed for you and lil' guy. Hang in there.
I had to have the little kitten euthanized this morning. :'( The vet said he had pneumonia. There were several treatments they could have tried, but the vet said it would be very expensive, and he thought it would probably die anyway. So, he's not suffering anymore. He sure was a fighter though. I didn't figure he would make it through the night last night, but he did.
Sooooooooo sorry, honey :'(

Thanks T. I'm more relieved than anything. He was suffering, and I can't stand to see animals suffering. I wasn't with him, when they gave him the shot. I don't like to be present, when they euthanize baby animals, because if they can't raise a vein, they put it directly in their heart. I can't deal with that. I've never seen it done, and would probably pass out. I've seen the normal way too many times, and that bothers me too, but as a 'Mama" I owe it to my "kids" to be there with them. It's very hard, but I wouldn't let them be alone through that.

I was hopeful at first, but as time went on, I really didn't think he was going to make it. He really was a fighter though. They just fell in love with him at the vets office. He was all black, with long hair that was real wavy, and big beautiful light blue eyes. He really was a little doll. He was very lovable too. The day I found him, he wasn't scared of me at all. The first time I picked him up, he nuzzled his little face against mine, and stared into my eyes, with his big blue eyes. What a sweet little kitten, it's too bad it turned out like this because, I think he would have been a great lap cat LOL!!!

Dudley is doing really good right now. I've been giving daily deep muscle massages. He really enjoys it, and wants them all the time, infact he bugs me to death for them. He is just such a good boy. Everytime I look at him, I'm reminded that he is Feline Leukemia positive, and I wonder how long he has. :'( Hopefully, if I keep him happy, it wont progress as fast. I sure hope so.
