Title: Architectural Atrocities You'll Want to Avoid
Post by: Gryphon on October 02, 2006, 08:13:58 PM
#1. THE HOLLYWOOD FRONT. Seen in practically any neighborhood less than 50 years old. Whats the point here? Does someone hope that people will only see their house in dead-on front views? Nothing screams "I cut every corner I could!" louder than brick or stone spread thinly over one face of a house like peanut butter on wheat. Witness this example:

Materials shoould change at an interior corner ONLY.

Good save, Gryphon.
;)

In all honesty, we're buying the neighborhood & school district more than the house...location, location, location!

I would've never put aluminum siding with a red & brown brick front...it's very 1977ish.

No, seriously. Im referring more to the common fad of today...a McMansion thats supposed to look like a classical formal residence. But you turn the corner and BAM its plastic.

What about those homes that have the very high ceiling in the foyer? I mean the two story ones w/the windows. That just seems to be such a waste of space and energy (heat/air-con). Somewhat like this, but what I'm thinking of has a larger window...

I am convinced that most people who live in those homes do so because they get a "warm fuzzy" when other people tell them how nice it looks (whether or not it's a white lie).

Ms Mojo, perfect. That foyer probably comes from the same kind of fake fronted house Im talking about.
Theres a general "over do" of two story spaces, cathedral ceilings, etc. thats been going on for years, IMHO.

One way NOT to make your house the neighborhood standout:

We have a house in our association that defied the rules and painted their home Robin Egg Blue. And, it's in the cul de sac that faces the entry to our development. Sadly, it will cost the association tons in legal fees to enforce the restriction...doesn't quite make much sense to me.

well, regarding the three story house with the trashier houses on either side... at least they can "look down" on their fellow nieghbors, OR they can totally look OVER them! LOL
