Martin Luther King, Jr.:

I look forward confidently to the day when all who work for a living will be one with no thought to their separateness as Negroes, Jews, Italians or any other distinctions. This will be the day when we bring into full realization the American dream -- a dream yet unfulfilled. A dream of equality of opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed; a dream of a land where men will not take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few; a dream of a land where men will not argue that the color of a man's skin determines the content of his character; a dream of a nation where all our gifts and resources are held not for ourselves alone, but as instruments of service for the rest of humanity; the dream of a country where every man will respect the dignity and worth of the human personality.

Change is like to surfing. You can't just paddle into life, stand still and expect to stay on top of your board. The waves of change will knock you off and drag you under. You have to shift on your surfboard, bend your knees and balance yourself, depending on which way the waves take you.

Some people even think changes are fun!

You are where you are because you want to be there. If you want to be somewhere else, you'll need to change.

Not trying to threadjack, just have a comment about inspirational quotes that I had to share.

When I was in junior high, in health class we had to keep these journals in class. They all had to start out with that day's quote of the day as the topic of sorts, and I kid you not, we had the Serenity Prayer at least 5 times that year. The first time I heard it outside of that classroom was as an adult, and I cringed when I heard it and this person looked at me knowingly, and automatically assumed I was a recovering alcoholic (I was in my early 20s, for heavens sake! Even if I'd had a drinking problem, I wouldn't have admitted it! LOL) So anyway, later I found out the reason for the look, and this story has been one of my favorites ever since.

I thought I'd share this...was part of my class discussion this week:

Coffee

You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way Again........

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how
things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up.
She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as
though just as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and
placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil.
In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and
in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without
saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners.

She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl.
She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.
Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did,
and noted that they were soft.
The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After
pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.
Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter
smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.
The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same
adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently.
The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being
subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid
interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became
hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the
boiling water, they had changed the water.
Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your
door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt
and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the
heat?

Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial
hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff?

Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough
with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the
very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it
releases the fragrance and flavor
If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to
another level?

How do you handle adversity?
Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they
just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest
future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in
life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were
born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life
so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is
crying.

It's easier to build a child than to repair an adult...
This is so true - May we all be COFFEE

Been slacking on this...going to renovate a tad.

At the risk of infringing upon copyrighted Breathnach's Simple Abundance, would like to share daily thoughts extracted from her "daybook of comfort and joy".

Today's reading was entitled, "Cooking for Comfort"...and goes on to provide the definition of comfort food & then contrasts it with the other 5 food groups: haute cuisine, lean cuisine, soul food, nursery fare, and chocolate (in a league of its own )...different foods for different moods.

Comfort food is described as "quirky, quaint, quixotic"...everyone is consoled by different things...

The high point extracted: carbohydrates are often in the comfort foods we seek out (e.g. lasagna)...know why? Because they change our brain chemistry & literally increase the level of serotonin!!!

So, what is YOUR comfort food?

Chocolate, definitely. I didn't even have to think about it. It's something that I could never eliminate from my life. Limit, yes, but never erase entirely.

Interesting, kimmi...I love banana things, too...much better than the fruit itself. Not many things beat a nice slice of banana nut bread slathered in butter. :)

Chocolate is also a weakness of mine, PIYA. Are you selective, or will any chocolate do for you?!?

I enjoy good chocolate. "Good" equates to smooth, melting in your mouth, creamy, but when I decide that I need chocolate...just about anything chocolate will do.

Yep, my tastes are very similar. There are times that I crave "good" chocolate, similar to what you mentioned...creamy & rich. We have a local manufacturer of chocolate here in NW PA called "Daffins" and I have yet to find too many chocolates that compare.

However, on the average day, I would just as soon eat a piece of Hershey's.

I had a job when I first moved here for a month turning down beds at a nice hotel.  I had access to lots of Godiva.  It was good - for free, but I would never run out and buy some.  We just had a coffee/chocolate shop open here in my small town.  The Chocolate Bean - I think it is a clever concept.
Title: Re: Inspirations to Motivate
Post by: Sunny on July 07, 2007, 12:21:02 PM
I would take Daffin's or even Philadelphia chocolate over Godiva any day.

The Chocolate Bean? Are they coffee beans actually dipped in chocolate? Or chocolate flavored coffee? Guess that would be considered mocha...

Okay, now my mouth is absolutely DROOLING!!!! The nearest place that sells good dipped strawberries is about 35 miles away.

I worked at a card store in high school & the store owner had a large (fondue-type) machine & we'd make them for sidewalk sale days...

Today's quote:

The table is a meeting place, a gathering around, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction.

An excerpt:
Quote
We must turn off the television and the telephone, hunker down in front of our hearths, and leave our briefcases at the office...we must march into the kitchen and find easy, heartwarming tings to make from scratch...and we must gather at the table, alone or with friends or with lots of friends or with one friend, and eat a meal together....without food we would die...without fellowship life is not worth living.

Today's simple abundance is in line with a post I recently contributed to Tallulah's Tales...basically about using the "good stuff".

Continuing with the food & dining theme...today Breathnach reminds us that we should start using and enjoying the beautiful things that already surround us in our homes.

Prepare an attractive dining table -- dine rather than just eat -- a step towards SELF-NURTURANCE..."the simple, the doable, and the affordable". Create a scene of harmony.

Do you have a special set of dinnerware that you only use for "company"? Ever put flowers or a centerpiece created from fresh fruits in the center of the table?!? Dare yourself to eat dinner tonight by candlelight...you deserve the ambiance.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
