Plans were under way for Madison County to erect a statue of James Madison at the City/County building; until allegations of racism and slave holding arose to quash the $200,000 project.
I'm surprised they didn't move ahead with the plan anyway, install the statue, then remove it once the public outcry became intolerable.
Maybe they ought to use that 200k for road repairs around the county?
I agree, $200,000 could be used in a better way. My question is how far does all this nonsense go? Will we rename all the things named after the founders of the country. Many of the most prominent men were slave holders. Most of the first 15 Presidents were, too. We can sanitize our history but we can't change it. I think if we don't recognize and admit past mistakes and discuss them with our children (in an age appropriate way) we will never be at peace.
That money would be better spent on our roads IMO.
