. . .historic buildings in Kathmandu lay in rubble. The injured wound up being treated outside hospitals in chaotic scenes. Residents, terrorized by a seemingly endless series of aftershocks, huddled outdoors for safety.
The death toll was reported by Nepal's Ministry of Home Affairs. But given that the rescue effort is still in its early stages and that people in outlying areas may well have been affected, as well, it seems probable the number will rise.
And Kathmandu, which sits in a valley surrounded by the Himalayas, has a population of 1 million people. . .

I didn't know he was excited! :rotfl:
Over 1,000 reported dead in Nepal earthquake, including several hikers on Mt. Everest after an avalanche.
I figured the death toll would be at least 10% of the population earlier. I now believe that estimate to be dreadfully low. . .
I kinda figured that the Everest avalanches would take out a few people.

I saw / heard one account that indicated the slopes of Everest were "packed", including the base camp, just prior to the EQ. They likely will find scores of people beneath the snow come springs thaw. . . :spooked:
There are also a couple of higher camps that haven't been heard from as of a couple of hours ago. I think most people in the main base camp are okay.
13 dead on Everest so far.
Here's a picture of a friend of mine at the Everest Base Camp. She and her husband are the farthest couple to the right (standing) in the picture. They were there last November. :spooked:

More than 2000 dead and 17 of them on Everest, with many "lost and whereabouts unknown". :spooked:
3,726 confirmed dead as of this morning!
I heard on the news this morning that there are hundreds still stranded at 20,000' on Everest.
Could be thousands more deaths before this is over.
Now at 4k and counting.
