Chile's Calbuco volcano erupts for first time in more than 40 years . . .

This is an awesome photograph!

That's a great pic of the volcanic lightning as well.

Thats one of the exact reasons I like it; along with the whole "surreal" feeling and vision it demonstrates!

So given the awesome sights and destruction we see with Calbuco, and the documented power and destruction this nation experienced with Mt St Helens recent eruption, what are your thoughts surrounding the discovery announced today pertaining to the super-volcano that is Yellowstone?

http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/24/us/yellowstone-supervolcano-magma-reservoir-discovery/ (http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/24/us/yellowstone-supervolcano-magma-reservoir-discovery/)

Estimates are that the amount of molten lava/magma now known to exist beneath the caldera that is Yellowstone, would be sufficient to fill the entire grand canyon to its very brim, 14 times over.  :spooked:  In fact, scientists now theorize with a fairly high level of confidence, that the source for Yellowstone's heat may very well come from the very core of this planet!

(Prior to todays announcement, the known magma reserves for Yellowstone were enough to fill the grand canon only 2.5 times).

As the article points out, when Mount Tambora blew many cubic miles of debris skyward and killed about 10,000 inhabitants of Indonesia in 1815, the year 1816 was known world-wide as the year with no summer, driving widespread crop failures and record low yields. Yellowstones historic eruptions dwarfed that event every single time. . .

I saw that article today.  I'm glad I won't be around when that thing blows again.

Volcanology is a precarious science at best; the reality is there is no way to be certain with any reliable sense of confidence surrounding just when that super-volcano will awaken and rear its head to modern civilization. In fact the current "odds" of it happening are the same as being struck by lightening!  :spooked:
