Title: West Coast Longshore Workers & Pacific Maritime Association Shut Down
Post by: Palehorse on February 13, 2015, 05:45:24 PM
So it has been basically a middle-page news item, and a "filler" story within local newscasts, but this labor dispute is now hitting home in the midwest and across this country; or is about to.

The Pacific Maritime Association said it will halt loading and unloading at the ports, including busy operations at Long Beach and Los Angeles, on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The management association said it was taking the action because it does not want to pay higher premium wages for weekend and holiday operations while it contends workers, represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, are conducting a work slowdown.
. . .

So workers getting paid an average wage of 83k a year, or 147k a year if you believe the Management's claims, are being put out of work due to a labor and contract dispute. . . Big deal eh?

Flash to all of those jobs those ships stacking up on shore. Those that aren't a part of this dispute. What jobs you ask?

Toyota, and Honda assembly plants and all of their suppliers. Suppliers like Greenfield Technology, Inc. located in the Flagship in Anderson, Indiana; whose workers were informed today that they are to report for work on Monday, but in all likelihood will be laid off for the duration of this strike.

Workers that are being paid 10.00 an hour, (barely above unemployment compensation wages), are being sidelined by those being paid 83-147k a year and their employers. For who knows how long.

And those working at Honda and Toyota assembly plants domestically are being sidelined for the duration as well. And if it lasts long enough, dealerships will also join the ranks of the idled, along with an untold number of retail operations and manufacturing operations; those that remain in operation after the flight of manufacturing in this nation that is.

My own employer, with a large operation on the west coast itself, has already idled assembly operations on the west coast due to the interruption of work; despite the fact there is a very large cargo ship loaded with the materials needed to support their operations sitting just a few miles offshore.

Now I am sure there are of number of people here that will rush to judgment to lay the blame for this squarely at the feet of the presiding POTUS, but one has to ask, Who really is to blame here? Especially as unemployment begins swelling rapidly due to the incorporation of "just in time" supply chains that rely on importation of raw materials to conduct day-to-day operations?
