Title: Vacation time
Post by: libby on July 30, 2014, 11:26:13 AM
Seems like just about everybody goes on vacation this time of the year. July and August here in the D.C. metro are usually miserable, and everybody heads for the beaches, if not for a week or two, weekends, and my neighborhood is like a ghost town.  I love the beach -- the sound, smell, sight of the ocean, the seafood, especially the oysters -- but like to go in the fall. I walk and walk. One year, the year our mother died, my sisters and I spent Thanksgiving at Myrtle Beach, SC.  Nothing traditional and that was good, for our mother loved Thanksgiving and fixing a big dinner for all of us.

  Hi, Duke. I love the mountains too.  I go back home at least once a year and stay about a week. You are lucky to still have your dad. Mine died when I was barely out of high school, but mom lived decades longer. After mom died, I took a trip to the mountains by myself. Just wandered, ended up in Lambsburg, VA, where my mother was born, visited some relatives, met some more, there and in Mt. Airy; then, still not ready to leave, I decided to go to Bakersville, where my father was born. Headed towards Asheville, but turned north on a little country road that went winding up, up, up.  I passed one little pick-up truck before I got to the top, where there was a sign pointing down to Bakersville. I went down, down, down and ended up in a tiny little town with mountains on every side. Didn't know it then, but I had just driven down the NC side of Roan Mountain. I didn't stay long because it was mid-afternoon and there were no motels in sight. Keep meaning to go back in early June to the Rhododendron Festival, when it is said the mountain is covered with flowering rhododendrons.
