Title: Back in the Workforce..
Post by: Mr442 on September 16, 2013, 11:00:55 AM
...Part time anyway.

Wanting some extra money for a few things, and not wanting to wait forever, I went out and found a part time job.  I am now a driver for Indiana Car Exchange.  They are a dealers auto auction located in south east Boone County.  I was in a local restaurant the other day and happen to overhear a lady in the booth behind me talking about driving cars for the auction.  A light went on in my head as I thought, "that would be perfect for me.  I like driving all types of different cars, and they would pay me!"  So I went down last Wednesday and applied for a job, and had one before I left.

I then went to work the next day picking up cars.  Friday is auction day, so I learned the fine art of driving across the auction block without blowing the horn, cussing at, or giving the finger to the buyers who wander about like cows in the pasture, giving no regard to moving vehicles.

Most of my co-workers are folks like me, they are retired and do this for the fun of it, while picking up some pocket change.  I have to keep the hours under 30 a week, and that is just fine with me.  3 days will do that without a problem, and that is all I wanted at the most.  I am sure this winter will be challenging, but I have good cold weather gear and am looking forward to it.

Sometimes I miss going to the auto auctions but then I come to my senses.  The biggest one I ever went to had 8 lanes of cars and, as my luck always goes, the cars I was interested in would always go through at the same time in two different lanes and my authorized bidder would have to go bid on one while I tried to get the other one.....Never a dull moment.

I will have to agree about some of those dealers being rude, crude, and stupid when those cars are driven through.  I always got there in time to walk the lot and see which cars I wanted to bid on and checked them out before the sale.  That takes some time at some of those larger sales but it pays to do that.  The hardest thing for me was buying what people would want rather than what I wanted and liked.

Congrats on the new job.  I think you'll like it.

Yes, my 442 will be the recipient of some of these funds, and only after it is done will another project come along.

I've been very busy lately.  Driving nice cars, junk cars, and everything in between.  I took a few days early in October to go to California to help my oldest son move home.  Haven't had much free time, but things are levelling out.  Greg starts Purdue in January on the GI bill, so things should settle down even a little more.  Sure hope so.
