Title: Rain
Post by: libby on February 26, 2013, 11:09:41 PM
It's raining here so I'm off to bed. I love the sound of rain on the roof at night. When I was a young girl, I imagined myself a little treehouse I could escape to any time I pleased. It was up high, where I could hear the rain on the leaves. I still go there sometimes ... all I have to do is close my eyes ... and ...

... dream a little dream ...

This was exactly one of the reasons I loved spending my summers on the family farm as a kid. That tin roof and rain resulted in some of the best sleep I have ever had in my entire life. Laying there in those big feather beds my grandmother had, hearing the rain hit that roof; it would take me away in seconds. . .

Whenever I am told, or tell myself, to find a "happy place", that is exactly where I go. I'd stay there if it were possible.  :smitten:

That takes Ole' Duke back in time when I stayed overnight with me g-parents, rain fallin' on the tin roof at night and in the mornin' the smell of eggs, bacon, sausage and homemade biscuits fresh off of the wood stove.
:)

I love feather beds! We would go stay with one of the great aunts in Indy and sleep upstairs in a feather bed. It was so much fun and she lived in town so we could walk to the grocery store for her and to the drug store and a park. All things that were different since we lived in what was then the country.

It just started raining. It was predicted, maybe a lot today, but things change quickly here. Anyway, I'm in my bedroom and can hear the rain on the roof  My plants will enjoy it also.

My back yard, as seen from the living room, looks a little like fairyland to me. The crape myrtle tree just keeps getting bigger, and is far larger than I imagined when I planted what I thought was a small bush. It's beautiful now with the green leaves and deep pink flower clusters, but even in winter the limb structure is beautiful.

The Rose of Sharon, from bush to small tree -- that I let go without too much cutting back last fall -- has been in bloom for at least a month -- big delicate-looking white flowers on the tallest one and lavender-pink blossoms on the rest.

I need to go out and look around, especially outside the fence, where my son planted figs like the ones at Mt. Vernon. The leaves have been gigantic the last two years, and I don't know if that's because I forgot to cut them way back in the fall, or global warming is affecting them.

Have been visiting my treehouse fairly often lately -- when I go to bed and want to put problems out of my mind and get some sleep, I imagine myself there. That's what I did last night. It was raining, so all I had to do after I got comfortable and closed my eyes was to think about the sound of rain on the leaves, and there I was. I remember laughing about something that happened between another person and me, then drifted off to sleep and didn't wake up 'til 6 this morning. Tried to remember what made me laugh, but drew a blank. Still can't remember.

Went to bed last night to the sound of light rain. Woke up this morning to the heavy rain. We didn't get all that much from the first storm from the west, but the one coming up the east coast seems stalled over us. I think we've made up for the summer months when we got no rain at all.

Haven't listened to the news yet, but suspect there'll be reports of flooding in the flood-prone areas, and wrecks! Seems like every morning this past week there's been a big wreck - involving multiple vehicles including a tractor trailer or two somewhere in the D.C. metro area -- either on the Beltway in Maryland and Virginia and/or I-95 here and to the south.
