Title: Getting to know you ....
Post by: libby on February 21, 2013, 11:12:40 AM
How well do we really know the people we come in daily contact with?

After I moved from one job to another (same employer, different office) I got a Christmas card from a man I'd worked with for several years. I knew him as a nice, quiet, pleasant gentleman, an analyst and Navy officer.

It was a nice Christmas card with the standard greeting, but what he wrote below that made me stop and think. After wishing me well in my new job, he wrote this:

"As you know, all of life is a process of testing and initiation, always preparing for a higher level of consciousness -- and illumination."

That made perfect sense to me. Made me wish we'd gotten to know each other better.

Perhaps. You know how it is -- if we live long enough our idea of what makes a person attractive change -- we meet or work with someone who seems to be too perfect to be true -- but he/she is married. Or both of you are.

I indeed know exactly what you mean here. . . It's funny how those kinds of things happen isn't it?

How about your turn?

The stories I referred to above are not about me; they're about others; some I worked with in a fairly large office after I moved to Northern Virginia.  I was very shy as a girl, and a very late bloomer who never quite caught up, so it would have taken me a while, if ever, to figure out what was going on if it hadn't been for a man I worked with until I got my security clearance. He was a psychologist and former spook; he told me all the office gossip,  :spooked: which was that two supervisors were romantically involved with two of their employees (all married to others), and another woman, an analyst, was having an affair with a married man who didn't work with us. He laughed at me when I told him that one of the secretaries told me she was involved with a married man; said they met at lunchtime (for sex, not lunch). He said, "Libby, you mean you've never heard of the lunchtime quickie?" And then there was the cute little secretary who persuaded a married military man to give her a ride home after our Christmas party, and the next day told me (and I'm sure others) that he came on to her and she wondered if she should report him.

Think about it for sure. But I could only hope to one day live up to such a complimentary position as that which you ascribe to me here. . .  :-[

But thank you. . .
