As you know, we lost our son's German Shepherd Dog this past spring, and we have been absolutely heart broken ever since.:'( A few weeks ago we were in the vets office for another pet, and were inquiring about GSD breeders in the area. As we were standing there asking, a family came in with a new Shepherd puppy. We spoke with them and found out there was a breeder not too far away.
Later that day we were in the middle of puppydom, with many to choose from. Trouble was, the wife and I didn't quite agree on which one. The black and tan was what she had in mind, but there was a sable coated pup that looked good as well. In the next pen was a group that were a little younger, but not quite ready to adopt, they were the black and silver coated. Damn if those weren't going to be magnificent dogs too. So we ended up leaving without a pup.
In the days that followed we ended up discussing finding an older Shepherd that needed a home, so we started looking. There are many out there who NEED a home. At that point we decided that someone would buy the puppies we had looked at no matter what. But not everyone would take a dog in need of rescue. So.... :rolleyes:
We found a few on Petfinder.com, and started narrowing the list down. I ended up calling about a 4 year old female, but she was going out for a meet and greet and would likely be adopted, which she was. However the lady at the rescue (GSD Rescue Indy) had a two year old male who the potential adopters had backed out on. We met the dog last night, and now he is part of the family. :smitten: His name is Ocura, which is dutch (or close to it) for Cure. His original owners named him, and he responds to it, so we are not changing it. He needed a good home, and we needed him, so we are now starting the curing of both of our hurt.

Being a new dog owner myself, I now understand even more on just how much LOVE you can get by one of those critters. :yes:

You already have the cure for what ails all three of you. It is the bonding that now begins.
There is no soul on the face of this planet more faithful than that which resides in our canine companions. They cure broken spirits, hearts, and lives; even when their own are just as bad or worse. And never ask for anything other than your companionship and a little attention.
Congratulations upon finding your new companion. May the three of you find the road ahead full of just enough curves to keep your attention, and full of the things that bring you closer with each step.

There is good news, and then there is bad news. :rolleyes:
Bad News first, Ocura did not work out. In spite of him passing the cat test at the kennel, he must have copied off someones paper. He kept trying to get to our cat. :eek: He was a little too curious of our little dog as well, so we were on guard. Then my son came in, and Ocura went nuts. Finally got him settled down and he was OK with Mike, but not great. Mike returns on Monday and we go through it again. This time Ocura flat out got aggressive with Mike. He went back to the rescue last evening. Can't have this behavior, and we could only see similar incidents with other people.
The good news! We had made this decision on Saturday, and were holding onto him until the rescue could work something out. Last evening he met his new family, and is doing well. No other pets, a couple in their mid 50's, and no kids around. So far all are bonding and things are going smooth.
We are glad we were able to help the rescue identify some potential issues with him. His past history is somewhat unclear, and it is obvious he has been ignored quite a bit, and possibly someone was abusive. We gave him almost a week of unconditional love, in spite of his issues, and we could see he was slowly coming around with the two of us. He is a great dog, but unfortunately he was not the right one for us.
We are going to wait on my oldest to get here in a couple of weeks, and will revisit the dog issue then, with all of us involved. We want/need one that is friendly to all of us, not just the wife and I.
Sounds like it all worked out for the best....if a dog is going to be part of the family, it has to work both ways.
