Businessman donates $20,000 to Police Department for new K-9s

ANDERSON, Ind. — An Indianapolis businessman wrote the Anderson Police Department checks totaling $20,000 Monday morning.
According to police spokesman Detective Joel Sandefur, David Myers, vice president of regional business development for F.E. Moran Inc. Alarms, contacted the department last week after he learned the department had lost two dogs in the line of duty in three weeks.
Myers sold his company, Myers Protection Services, to F.E. Moran in June, according to the company's website.
"We knew he was going to be giving a large donation, but had no idea it was going to be that significant," Sandefur Said.
Sandefur said the department is very grateful for Myers' donation, and the money should cover a large portion, if not all, of the costs to replace the two police dogs, which typically cost between $10,000 and $12,000.
Officer Matt Jarrett, who lost his canine partner "Magnum" during a manhunt after a bank robbery last week, has indicated he would like a new dog to work with. The department is hoping to purchase a dog for him to begin bonding and training with in the next couple of weeks. Sandefur said the department is waiting for Officer Marty Dulworth, who was shot in the legs last month during a disturbance in Pendleton, to recover before they replace his dog "Kilo."
While Myers' gift is by far the largest, it is not the only donation the department has received in the wake of the dog shootings, Sandefur said. A couple of young girls donated money they earned operating a lemonade stand. Another young boy brought in a cigar box filled with cash.
"There's been a wide range of community members out there who want to be part of the donation process," Sandefur said.
It's been a rough month for the department, but Sandefur said many of the officers have been touched by the display of support from the community.
Sandefur said the department has a fund set up specifically for their K-9 unit, which they use to buy everything from dog food, to buying new dogs.
Anyone interested in donating to the fund should contact the Anderson Police Department at 648-6700.
