Title: Brickyard Report
Post by: Mr442 on July 31, 2012, 09:36:45 AM
OK, just to be clear, I practically grew up at Sun Valley (Anderson) Speedway and Mt. Lawn, plus I have been to many other tracks of all kinds.  Having said that, I like to think I know a good race when I see it.  Well folks, the Brickyard 400 was not a good race IMHO.  As Homer Simpson would say, "BORING!!!"  I didn't go looking for wrecks, but I did expect some fender to fender competition.  Sure as hell wasn't any that we could see.

Speaking of seeing, IMS is the most piss poor track to see a race at.  Luckily we were directly across from a large video screen.  Not as good a view as I would have had from home, but better than nothing.

Good thing the tickets were free, as I would have hated to pay for that fiasco.  And apparently others feel the same as attendance was down again.

Now the people watching was top notch.  For a while I thought we might have been at a Wal-Mart    :o :o :o
Some good sights and unfortunately, some that made me want to wash out my eyes with battery acid.

All in all though, my son Mike and I had a good time.  And that is priceless :smitten:

I had a similar experience back in 2005, I had free tickets and went with a buddy.  It was boring as can be, but we managed to have a good time, just as you did.  I will never go back for a NASCAR race.  I have had the honor of sitting in our companies suite, and watch the Indy 500 time trials, and that was a blast.

glad you and your son was able to manage to enjoy your time together.

My daughter and SIL feel the same way.  The company he worked for gave everyone tickets for the first or second one, don't remember which, and they were thrilled but after attending said they would never go back for the same reasons you stated.

Glad you had an enjoyable day with your son so it wasn't a complete wash out.

Didn't want to rain on your parade, but I was afraid you'd come away pretty disappointed. I've never been to a NASCAR event at IMS, but have attended my share of Indycar events there.

It's a good time but if viewing the race is high on your list of "must haves" you'll come away bitterly disappointed; as you now have seen for yourself.

Some of the best times I've had there were in seats as far up as you can get. It's the only way to see all you can at the IMS, and even then it is not a whole lot. . .

I'm like you and feel that sitting in my chair at home and watching on the big screen is a much more suitable venue for enjoyment.

The worst part is the hike to the south 40 after the race, and then jockeying for position in order to get home. Nothing like a day in the hot sun, and a long hike back to the truck afterwards, to get everybody irritable and downright mean. . .  :icon_twisted:

I hate that they black out the Indy 500. . . but I usually find other things to occupy me until the tape delay broadcast that night. And while the inevitable "spoiler" presents itself prior to the delayed broadcast, I've found that it can be a good thing too. If I don't like who won then I can always forego viewing it!

We did OK getting out.  I parked in Lot #2 between Georgetown Road and Winton Ave in Speedway.  They ended up routing us south on Lyndhurst, and I took Rockville road on west.  I was only a tad out of my way, unlike the guy in front of me from Hancock County.  He got on 465 and headed around the south side.  At least I was headed in the general direction of home.

Yep, they black out the Brickyard 400, the Indianapolis 500, the Colts when at home, don't show the Indianapolis Indians games, the drag races at Indianapolis when there are happening.  Why?  It's all about the money.  They send these show out all over the world and people who live within a 50 mile radius can't see them.  We are to drag our asses out of our homes  , fight the traffic, fight the heat, fight the high prices to see the damn things.

Too old, don't give a damn seeing the millionaires playing with their million dollar cars and millionaire players having fun and making money.     :trustme:

OK, I'm waiting for "ME" and the Hawk to defend these millionaires.  Especially the Multimillionaires, playing their Millionaire ball players in a taxpayer paid for building and paying 1% tax on every meal you buy out in the county of Marion and the surrounding counties.   But we can thank our lucky stars that Hamilton county cut us off from touching Marion county, the great city of Indianapolis.

But, that is the way it's always been the small taxpayers carrying the Rich, the Millionaires and the Billionaires on our taxpayer backs.  But that is what the Golden Boy Mitt Romny has done for years, and years and years, let us say over 60 years.
