Title: I haven't actually slept in days...
Post by: ~Daisy~ on December 28, 2006, 03:51:46 AM

So much for The nighttime sniffling sneezing coughing aching stuffy
head fever so you can rest medicine.

If it means my body is at any thing more or less than a 90 degree angle at the waist, my lungs are having none of it. I think I'm drowning in my own congestion.

Tonight as I sit here in the glow of the pathetic Christmas tree with my handy-dandy notebook (Dell, that is) I take a moment to compare last night's attempt at sleep to tonights. Last  night I did somehow find a way to get a tiny bit of sleep, even if at first I felt as though I had a 2 ton elephant making his home on my chest. Gasping for air while sitting up in bed, trying to find some happy medium between sleeping comfortably and just plain sleeping in general--not fun. The fear even crossed my mind once or twice that as hard as it was to breathe--and the fact that I was actually forcing myself to breathe because my lungs just couldn't fully function on their own--that there was a possibility I would quit breathing in the night and since I was so doped up on cough  syrup, would I even know? But at least somehow I was able to sleep, even if I had a cramp in my neck later. This morning when I woke, or I guess I should say yesterday morning when I woke since it is technically 3:30 am on Thursday, the elephant had left, but he left behind some New Orleans swampland in my lungs. That and some incredibly sore ribs.

My attempt at some sleep tonight hasn't been any better, even if its been a bit different. As I mentioned, Dumbo has left the building taking his 2-ton a$$ with him, but I still can't sleep despite yawning like crazy and being on the verge of ODing on Nyquil. Even that isn't strong enough to knock me out through my coughing fits. The only way to keep from coughing is to sit straight up, feet propped up on the coffee table in front of me. My bed is calling my name but I've given up any shred of hope that I will feel the comfort of my silky 850 thread count linens tonight.

My mother and father have basically been "on-call" for me all day, bringing over medicine when I would run out, making a drive thru run for the boys when I was too miserable to even contemplate their lunch menu, even offering to take me to the doctor. Despite everyone's urging, I passed on the whole doctor thing (I mean, really, what is the doc going to do? Wave a magic wand and make me better? No, he's  just going to give me some prescriptions for antibiotics which I believe are overly prescribed anyway and send me on my merry way, smiling as I shell out $89 for the visit--provided they do not take any chest  x-rays. I've been here before. Self employed household with no group health plan; I know the routine.) Furthermore, my mother had the notion that I possibly have pneumonia (she's an expert on this one; she knows the symptoms better than some doctors, I'm telling ya) and mentioned the words "overnight hospital visit" and I immediately discounted the option of going to the doctor. I can afford a visit, but when we're talking about actual hospital crap, uhh, I'd rather cling on to my pennies. Sometimes I wonder if I'm really adopted and my birth parents were Jewish...

Now I'm miserable as heck and would give anything to be able to lie down. Heck, I'd even welcome a hospital room if it meant lying down. I don't feel too bad, as long as I'm sitting up with my eyes open. The minute my eyes close, the phlegm in my chest decides its party time and causes me to start choking again, regardless of my physical position, but the party is a lot wilder if I'm lying down.

I don't think I can take another night of this. I just want to sleep.
