Title: Should Anderson, Indiana give that old dinosaur, the Wigwam?
Post by: The Troll on May 02, 2010, 10:38:46 PM
For years and years the Anderson Wigman has cost the city of Anderson thousands and thousands of dollars, in upkeep and maintenance.

Should it be sold and taken off the taxpayers back?

Either sold or torn down and I would say torn down would be the better choice.

Why would you want to tear down or a perfectly good usable building? Especially one that is currently being used by the school system. Some of Ebbert is there, alternative school is there, priority school is going to start there, and the employee clinic is there. Sure lets just tear it down and build something new because we all know that demolition and rebuilding is far cheaper than maintaining.

This whole reshuffling of schools and building a new one just so they can keep the Wigwam amazes me. They said the cost of heating and maintaining it was too much to let it set idle but yet they are having to redo it to accommodate what they are doing now and they will still be heating it.  Shouldn't the school board be concentrating on making the curriculum better instead of reshuffling so people wouldn't be wanting out of this school system?

I've said it should be sold, torn down for  quite some time now, and that it has not only leads me to believe that someone is profiting from it being kept in the fold. Follow the money. . .

The glory days of Anderson are over and the glory days of the Anderson Indians basket ball team are over.

There will never be anything to replace General Motors and the money GM bought into Anderson and Madison County.  With the shortage of tax money we have in Anderson and Madison
County the money we have should be used for the living and not the dead.  Let someone buy the Wigwam and pay tax on it.

Is there anyone out there that can remember the "Drag" as I and my friend called it.  Up Meridian Street to 14th Street over to Main Street to 8th Street.  Round and round boys looking for girls and girls looking for boys.  My friend and I came to Anderson at least 3 days a week.  On Sunday to the 2 movies on Meridian Street or the two drive-ins, North and South.

Do you remember the first McDonald's where you could buy a hamberger for 14 cents when it first opened.  Elmo Flatt's Alibi, with his cop Banana Nose Hanna, Frisch's, the Pink Horse, the Rancho Grande, Burt T Owen's, the best malt and soda's, Linder's on the Point and the the best hot donuts in the world at Golden Crust, buying a whole tray of them.

Then a little older, the Shamrock, Kaydid, Caboose, Stables, Cowpalace and the best dancing and music, the Local 662 Union Hall.

This being done in, first a 1937 Terriplane tudoor coupe with suicide doors.  A 1954 4-door Ford Mainliner.  Then the most beautiful car I ever owned a 1955 Super 88 Oldsmobile, Orange and White with skirts and spinner hubcaps.  Then the fastest car I ever owned was a 1957 J2 Oldsmobile, White Hardtop, skirts and spinners.  All of this with 3 two barrel carburetors and a 3/4 cam.  Hot, Hot.  All of this on 25 cent a gallon gasoline.

Now these were the good old days, when you had money and could get and keep a job.

I don't think it is the money so much as some people of influence (read AHS grads) are so wrapped up in their past and the glory days that they think nothing else mattered in Anderson except the Anderson Indians and what they did and having the second biggest gym.
