Title: That stimulus package is doing a bang up job...

Jobless claims rise 18,000!!! and we was promised that unemployment would NOT rise above 8% IF this package was passed?

it seems to me that we should have taken a page out of the history books and mimic what Mr. Reagan did....and that was CUT TAXES, to stimulate the economy...............but it seems as if we are now doing the exact opposite.

But Henry the immediate economic turn around from the health care package being passed will be kicking in any time now and those 700 who lost jobs in Muncie at Sally Mae because of the government taking over student loans will be able to find jobs real quick to replace them.

Speaking of health care...I would like to have it. :(   I was on medicaid until March 31st.  Then they took it away from me because I don't have any children under 16 living with me any longer.  Never mind the 18 year old that is still in high school and relies on me to support her, somehow.

Surely you are not solely saddling the POTUS with those 18,000 jobs lost?

There were a lot more things that have driven that other than a health care initiative; like the economy for instance. And we all know what is to blame for that fine mess now don't we?

And excuse me but I sure don't believe for one instance that any tax cuts would have achieved anything other than letting those with all the money keep a little bit more of it. Us working class stiffs would still be in this mess and paying taxes on unemployment INSURANCE we paid for with our blood, sweat, and tears. . .

NO, but I am making a point about Pelosi, the Potus and the dems who was jiggy with spending a trillion dollars and proclaiming THAT if we didn't spend this money, we was doomed...and if we did, unemployement would not exceed 8%...and it has blown WAY past that and not getting any better and it has been a year later....

and YES, tax cuts for small business' and individuals would have absolutly stimulated the economy....instead of letting folks go, they could have hung on to them...

So in other words, there is zero margin for error, and your automatic assumption is that congress done nothing everything would be a lot better right now?

My youngest son was able to purchase his first house recently.  I believe that was thanks to the stimulus package.  He got a 100% financed, low interest, first time buyer package from the USDA.  That really helped him, and many others who bought houses under the same deal.

I think THAT may have been one of the few good things in the package....and THAT may have to be extended, because it STILL is not taking off as hoped, becasue there are too many unemployed...and THAT should have been fixed first...simply by cutting capital gains tax.....and we would have seen jobs being created....imo

Yeah, well, you're not an economist.  You should stick with your core competencies.

So in your opinion the past practices of letting the middle class carry the load (more taxes) would have been the best path to follow??? There is no question in my mind that taxes were going to rise, and the question as to whom they would be raised for was the key one.

Not a proven fact at all and your constant parroting of it doesn't make it so; supply side economics is dismissed by virtually all mainstream economists as hoopla.

Hey HH, the government really needs to run everything and there needs to be no private enterprise because that makes everyone unequal and that's a bad thing.  We all need to be poor except for the powers that be don't you know that.  I mean just think people like Bill Gates will be no more and there will be no hopes that there ever will be so we can all be happy and equal.  What a future we, our kids and grand kids, will have.   :smitten:

All I know is, during the reagan years, was the most prosperous time of economic growth of my life....and he did NOT achieve this by increasing the tax burden on Americans....or by more gov. control....he opened the market on free enterprise and let Americans keep more of their hard earned money to re-invest into american enterprise......it worked...that can NOT be disputed.

Reagan was rated fourth-best.

"Presidents and prosperity
Economy did best when Clinton was in office

By Dan Ackman
Forbes

Clinton's two terms in office (1993-2001) were marked by strong numbers for gross domestic product (GDP) and employment growth and especially for deficit reduction. His overall ranking puts him first among the ten postwar presidents — ahead of Lyndon B. Johnson, Kennedy and Reagan, who were tightly grouped behind the 42nd president and recent autobiographer.

The economy also added jobs at a faster rate under Clinton than under any postwar president except Carter.

The public's confidence in the economy hit an all-time high in the summer of 2000, near the end of Clinton's second term, according to Gallup. In the summer of 1992, before he was elected, it was at an all-time low.

Reagan's first term, marred by a nasty recession, was not stellar

Hum, lets see, that was right around the time of the Fannie Mae Freddie Mac loans where you could buy a house with no money or incremental taxes and oh yes there were the stated income loans for investors who couldn't qualify for a conventional loan but they could borrow 1 1/2 times the value of the house so they could walk out of closings with cash.  Ya, I can see where the Clinton economy was really great and, of course, that spurred the building trade as well as demand for materials and goods of that nature and made houses more affordable so, yes, I can see where that economy was good but gosh didn't that catch up with people later?  Oh I know, that was Bush's fault...he is the one who made those loans possible before he took office....Damn how silly of me.   I guess that stimulus package will work after all I mean taking our money through taxes and giving it to businesses so they can invest and then telling them how to run their businesses is the only solution here along with taxing the crap out of them if they dare make a profit.  I mean look at all the hiring going on and our unemployment rate is falling everyday and we're only a year and a half into it.  Wow, I'm impressed.  Those poor idiots who run those businesses really don't know what they're doing so the government really needs to step in and take over.  I mean it is, after all, for the greater good.  Yep, I see more and more everyday how that's gonna work and I'm gonna feel soooo much better when there are no more private businesses ruining things for the little guy and government is taking care of me and everyone else.  Equality for all that's the ticket.
