Okay, we have all heard and read about the controversial late night programming drama associated with Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien, and then the "do over" in which Jay is now back. . .
I've watched them and have now seen two of the shows with Jay back, and I have to say that between the two Jay does the better job of things. The "red headed stepchild" named Conan seems to have been subjected to a back door effort designed to remove him from the mix and leave the field to Jay and David Letterman; who by the way, substantially grew his market share during "the experiment.
I have always been a fan of Letterman though, and I still prefer his show to either version of the others, but after hearing the sniping over the experiment, I had to take an opportunity to compare for myself. Yeah the red head needed to go and out he went.
Lost in all of this though is a guy who I really think is better than all of them, Craig Ferguson. He is irreverent, funny as hell, and really has no qualms about taking on most topics and subject matter within the context of his humor. The man is just enjoyable to watch and hear. Yet, no one sees him jumping into that endless stream of human waste they call late night TV wars.
The whole situation reminds me of those soap opera wars that used to have so much meaning when most homes consisted of a single income family structure, and big corporations were scrambling to get the attention of the millions of stay at home moms; a bygone era these days.
Same thing, different time slot. . .
