Ivy Tech, Ball St. offer teaching degree program

INDIANAPOLIS — Ivy Tech Community College and Ball State University are making it easier for people to earn degrees to teach in Indiana elementary schools.

The two colleges signed an agreement Tuesday under which students can complete a two-year associate degree in elementary education at Ivy Tech, then receive up to 62 credit hours when they transfer to Ball State.

Working adults also will be able to take their final two years of classes from Ball State online.

Ball State will provide the curriculum for the Ivy Tech program.

The agreement takes effect in July.

Why would anyone want to teach and subject themselves to harsh criticism from parents, low pay, and very little reward? Not to mention false accusations from miserable rugrats who are pissed because they earned a D in basic math!

Next to impossible to explain -- unless you've been in a classroom and experienced a "teachable moment."

Or had students return after a few years and tell you that you were the reason they altered their lives for the better.

Or been invited to your students' class reunion and someone quotes what you said in class word for word because it is important to them.

Those days are incredibly rare. But they are burned into your memory.

There are a lot of wrong reasons to become a teacher. Maybe, though, there are a few that are the right ones.

I couldn't have said it better FTW.  My concern is why just elementary?  I guess you could get your core classes at Ball St. and the gen ed classes done at the tech school.  Other than cost, I can't imagine why someone would choose to go through it this way when it is the same amount of time at a 4 yr college.

This is a great example of why we do it.  I had this child in 3rd grade.  He was quiet (still is) and struggled because he had moved to the area unprepared from a different school system.  He came from a poor family and could have made poor choices after he left our elementary school.  Clearly he didn't!!
