Title: And you think your commute is bad?
Post by: Palehorse on January 20, 2010, 05:02:48 AM
http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-01-19/americas-75-worst-commutes/full/ (http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-01-19/americas-75-worst-commutes/full/)

The Daily Beast lists the top 75 worst. See if your commute made it. . .

# 9 on the list - Kennedy XPress way in Chicago. Yeah it's bad but they should've checked out the southbound Tri State on a Friday afternoon!

#12, Loop 610, surrounds Houston - Wrestled with this beast myself several times. It pisses me off pretty regularly.

#36 I-75, Cincinnati - Southbound. Oh yeah! This one had me exercising my road rage skills at a whopping 5 mph for over 45 minutes one afternoon. After that one I avoided the area by taking secondary roads the rest of the 2 weeks I was there last. It sucks and not very well either!

#49 I 65 southbound at Louisville, Court Street exit. Yep, this one's a patience snapper. Been there sitting in that crap several times myself!

#56 is I 65 Southbound at 82nd Street in Indianapolis. Child's play when compared to I 69 at rush hour, northbound or southbound, between 96th and 116th street.

I must admit there is one section where that is true.

On the northern side of the Beltway, after Georgia Avenue, it starts to drop down into the Rock Creek ravine (a section we "affectionately" call the Roller Coaster) you suddenly come up on a spectacular view of the Mormon Temple.

Just before you get there, there is an overpass, where for many years there used to be a graffiti message on it that said "Surrender Dorothy"

Always brought a smile!

Back to the article, I had to cringe when I read "Speed of worst bottleneck when congested: 21.2 mph"

This morning, near FedEx Field, I sat on the beltway for 15 minutes at 0 (that's ZERO) MPH!!!!

And that is NOT unusual at all!!!

My commute takes me past open fields and lakes.

Oh, crap. Sometimes they're frozen.

And, occasionally, I have to stop for turkey or deer in the road.

I don't commute to work....but I do drive 18 to school every morning.  Turning into AHS can be quite aggravating.

Been around that way a few times myself.  I normally stay out in Silver Spring when in that area and head up to that part of the Beltway either on Colesville Road or Georgia Avenue.   And I've been through the roller coaster quite a few times too.  ;D

#19

#19, San Diego Freeway (I-5), San Diego
Weekly hours of bottleneck congestion: 97
Worst bottleneck: Southbound, Manchester Ave
Length of worst bottleneck: .83 mi
Weekly hours of congestion on worst bottleneck: 14
Speed of worst bottleneck when congested: 28.4 mph

Location, Location, Location.

Fortuantely for me I've never commuted to work on I-5

I found one of the comments about the transit system in San Diego being poor and I wholeheartedly disagree. You may need to switch a couple times, depending on where  you're going, but there is hardly any place at all that you may want to go that you can't use public transortation to get to...even the beach. I've lived other places where the public transportation is so poor that it's an all day adventure to go to the mall. That's just travel time.

I loved the public transportation when I was in San Diego.  I took the trolley from Mission Valley to Old Town.  The trolley was also great for making it back to Mission Valley after a couple or five yards of beer at O'Hungry's.

Unfortunately, despite having been on the outer loop in that area, and admiring the temple on the hill each time, I never noticed the graffiti.  I'll have to look next time I'm in the area (which will hopefully be soon).
