The owner of Burd Ford in Lawrence was found dead in his office this morning, apparently by suicide.

Richard A. Burd, 43, was found by his wife and police on a couch in his office at 2:40 a.m., according to a Lawrence police report.

Christine Burd, 40, had gone to the dealership at 10300 Pendleton Pike when Richard Burd hadn't returned home. She said she left him at the office at 10 p.m. and grew concerned when she woke up at 2 a.m. and discovered he still hadn't come home.

Burd went to the dealership, saw her husband's car in the parking lot and called police before entering, according to the report.
. . .

And he owned a Ford dealership. . . Wonder why he killed himself???

Duke Gold did it last fall.  He had the VW dealership on west 16th street in Indy.  Both of those dealerships appeared to be successful, but you never know what was really going on.

Personally I can't see taking your life over a failed business, if in fact that is what was going on.

IPD and the coroner's office ruled Burds death a suicide by asphyxiation. Papers found at the scene led them to conclude he was "concerned over financial issues" for his remaining dealership. Burd Auto Mall in Greenwood was shut down in 2007, and Burd Ford remains. It is not clear if his widow will assume managerial responsibility of the remaining dealership.

Lot of folks did it as the depression hit back in the day. Sometimes the mind loses rationality. . .

It is too bad he couldn't think of a solution to his problems other than sucicide. It has to be terrible for his family.

I knew a person who did it and it was a good thing he did, or I'd have done it for him!
