"I don't suppose a person who has succumbed can be expected to recognize the coin that has bought him." - John Hersey 'The Child Buyer'

"Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love... true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn't matter if it's true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in." - Robert Duvall 'Secondhand Lions'

A great movie and a great quote. :)

From my very favorite of all time ...

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.

Unforgiven

Clint Eastwood (Bill Munny): I ain't like that no more. I ain't the same, Ned. Claudia, she straightened me up, cleared me of drinkin' whiskey and all. Just 'cause we're goin' on this killing, that don't mean I'm gonna go back to bein' the way I was. I just need the money, get a new start for them youngsters. Ned, you remember that drover I shot through the mouth and his teeth came out the back of his head? I think about him now and again. He didn't do anything to deserve to get shot, at least nothin' I could remember when I sobered up.
Morgan Freeman (Ned Logan): You were crazy, Will.
Clint Eastwood (Munny): Yeah, no one liked me. Mountain boys all thought I was gonna shoot 'em out of pure meanness.
Morgan Freeman (Logan): Well, like I said, you ain't like that no more.
Clint Eastwood (Munny): That's right. I'm just a fella now. I ain't no different than anyone else no more.

Kind of like my wife has done for me!

I believe there are monsters born in the world to human parents.  Some you can see, misshapen and horrible, with huge heads or tiny bodies; some are born with no arms, no legs, some with three arms, some with tails or mouths in odd places.  They are accidents and no one's fault, as used to be thought.  Once they were considered the visible punishments for concealed sins.

And just as there are physical monsters, can there not be mental or psychic monsters born?  The face and body may be perfect, but if a twisted gene or malformed egg can produce physical monsters, may not the same process produce a malformed soul?

Monsters are variations from the accepted normal to a greater or a less degree.  As a child may be born without an arm, so one may be born without kindness or the potential of conscience.  A man who loses his arms in an accident has a great struggle to adjust himself to the lack, but one born without arms suffers only from people who finde him strange.  Having never had arms, he cannot miss them.  Sometimes when we are little we imagine how it would be to have wings, but there is no reason to suppose it is the same feeling birds have.  No, to a monster the norm must seem monstrous, since everyone is normal to himself. - John Steinbeck "East of Eden"
