i've got an SUV that has started making this whining noise at speed... sounds a bit like a wheel bearing going, but it only makes the noise under power.. when coasting downhill at the same speed the noise stops. any idea?
thank you!
Transmission maybe?

Go over to Anderson Brent in the members area and ask the same question. He's a whiz at car trouble.
Could be a U-joint going bad. Any vibrations coming at you?
By the way, 442, I didn't mean that you weren't. Have you ever seen that mechanics thread that andersonbrent does elsewhere?

no vibrations... it feels like new, rolls straight for a mile with my hands off the wheel, just whines. can bad brakes do that? i got no brake "shudder" or anything, but... just a thought...
guess i really don't want it to be anything complicated (expensive)
oh! i probably haven't got to tell you guys! i got my car...
charger r/t!
and yep, that things got a hemi!

How long since the wheel bearings were last re-packed?

I hope for your sake it won't be anything complicated or expensive too. The reason I mentioned tranny is because of the fact it don't whine free wheeling but I sincerely hope I'm wrong since rear end is the other possibility. U joints would be the cheaper of the alternatives. Hope it ends up to be just one of those pesky little noises that a car can make that really don't mean anything though.

The ring and pinion (inside the rear end) would be my next place to check, especially with the difference between load and no load on it. Check for the proper lube level.

Congrats on owning one of the late model bad boy cars. Your license may be at risk!
my personal speed limit isn't what it once was... probably a good thing i didn't have this when i was 18 tho, cuz i found it still hugs the road pretty well at 125!
that said, mister cocky pants (no pics, no car)... here are the pics, though i still haven't washed it up...

Okay...call me dense, but what's so special about this car...interior looks standard....exterior appears to be non-descript. (http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/23.gif)
that thing's got a HEMI!
it's the badass of the sedan world... and the one we settled on is a bit less flashy than some are in the paint, but it's got it where it counts...
0-60 in under 6, 1/4 mile in high elevens.
As if I understood all that. LOL

:eek:Oh to have had that when I was in my 20's, or even 30's for that matter...... :drool1: Had a 442 once but the oil pan was shallow and it wouldn't do sustained speed. 4 on the floor and I could speed shift it by the sound of the engine...who needs a tach. Never did strip the gears doin' it either..... Did put a 2nd gear out in a Studebaker once speed shiftin' it though. :-\
shut up woman...you sound like a red neck...you know that's not good for here.
oops...ignore me...I'm drinking wine with my dinner and ....well I started before my dinner was ready.....LOL

I've always had a thing for cars I just can't help it. Heck I used to help my both my 1st and 2nd hubby's work on the cars. I've rebuilt carburetors, helped rebuild a transmission, changed plugs, hoses, and various other things. Only under the hood nothing under the car.... The tranny was out from under the car and on a bench. I've gotten away from it in the last 10yrs or so though 'cause cars aren't like they used to be. I still change the plugs, except for the one I can't get to, and clean the battery posts but that's as far as it goes. Not a red neck though just happen to like cars and at one time liked working on them....
