Title: Purpose in life
Post by: Mom on June 30, 2009, 01:12:01 AM
Can any life have "purpose" without faith in God? Can an atheist's life have "purpose"?

And what "purpose" does faith in God bring?  How does worshipping that which doesn't exist make life meaningful?

Do purpose and meaningful go hand in hand?

Is this a discussion of semantics?

More of definition.

I think something can have a purpose without it being meaningful.  I mean, a fork has a purpose, but other utensils can be used to perform the same task.  Is the fork's purpose meaningful?  I don't think it really is.

if you stick a fork in someones ass to get their attention........it becomes very meaningful

To both of you, especially if they call the cops.   But I don't believe the purpose of the fork is to get someones attention.  Do you?

Try eating spaghetti with a spoon.

My grandson is an atheist and he seems to have a purpose.  He wants much the same thing as someone who has faith in god he just believes in being true to himself and good to others.  I don't know if I can explain this right but he appreciates the things that nature has provided for us and, although he looks to no "creator" as such, looks within himself for solving his problems and reaches out to those close to him if he needs help.  So I guess his purpose would be to make himself and those close to him and anyone he happens to come into contact with feel welcome and comfortable in this world.  I have never known him to make fun of or put down anyone who is less fortunate than himself nor have I ever known him to not be understanding of others misfortune or problems.

I have, there is no law that says spaghetti must be eaten as 8 inch long strings.
