ROAN MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- An Amber Alert has been issued in Western North Carolina for two children who disappeared in the area of Roan Mountain near the Tennessee border.
Search teams with the Mitchell County Sheriff's office are looking for Alexander Suddeath, 6, and Heidi Suddeath, 4, according to a release from the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
The children's parents lost sight of them while returning to a public parking area in the Carter Creek Recreation Area around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office.
The release called the disappearance an abduction but that is just the protocol for issuing an Amber Alert, according to Nona Everette, missing person specialist with the NC Missing Persons Center.
"They really don't know if they were abducted. They just don't know," Everette said. "No one saw them being abducted." she said.
Search teams with dogs combed the area through the night, according to the NC Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. The search is a joint operation of the U.S. Forest Service, N.C. Division of Emergency Management, Mitchell County Sheriff's Office and Carter County, Tenn., Sheriff's Office.
Getting information about the search was hampered by the fact that there is no cell phone service on Roan Mountain area, said Everette.
Officials planned a noon press conference to release more details.
Alexander stands 4 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 55 pounds, with sandy brown hair, brown eyes and a scar on his right eyebrow.
He was last seen in a yellow shirt and navy blue shorts with croc shoes.
Heidi Suddeath is 3 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 38 pounds.
She has light brown hair, brown eyes and a scab on her right elbow.
She was last seen wearing a pink skirt, purple shirt and crocs.
The release asks for anyone with information on whereabouts of the two children to call 911.
