WASHINGTON - Authorities say a six-car commuter train has collided with another train near the Washington and Maryland border, killing at least one person and injuring dozens more.
D.C. fire spokesman Alan Etter says at least one person was killed and that this is developing into a "mass casualty event." He says crews are cutting apart the trains to get people out. He says there are severe injuries, but no indication how many.
As many as 55 people were injured, NBC affiliate WRC-TV reported.
Spokeswoman Taryn McNeil says the collision happened about 5 p.m. between the Fort Totten and Takoma Park stations on Metro's Red line.
The accident left one train partially on top of another and some passengers were beleived to be trapped in the wreckage, WRC reported.
Monday's derailment comes more than two years after a subway train derailed near downtown Washington, sending 20 people to the hospital and prompting the rescue of 60 people from a tunnel.

Holy Jeebus! That's the line I take when I'm in DC. Had I been on travel, I might have been on one of the trains as I go right through Fort Totten and Tacoma Park on my way to the Courtyard Marriott in Silver Spring. :spooked:
Two dead now!
Yikes!! That is no bueno! :o
No, it isn't. I've already called several friends who also take the Red Line in that direction and they're all ok. Either they drove downtown today or were vacationing.
It is amazing when things like this happen and people just happen to have made different choices. I'm glad your friends are okay.
Thanks Kim.

This within the very same article on CNN:
Metro officials said two men and seven women, all adults, were killed.
Mayor Adrian Fenty said at an earlier news conference that seven people were killed and he hoped the death toll did not climb any higher.
Up and down, up and down. . .
NTSB is saying it issued warnings to Metro in 2006 on the train that hit the stationary one, advising that it be replaced due to safety issues. . .
Back up to nine .....
