Cass County's unemployment is officially nearly 13 percent. That really means its probably close to 20 percent since the figures only reflect those who are still drawing unemployment. When your unemployment runs out they take you off the unemployed statistics....Always wondered what category those people go into...guess we'll have to ask Skip what's his name....or maybe check under the Third Street Bridge and ask them personally.
I think they are just called poor.....and maybe, if you are checking under bridges, homeless.
Unfortunately, you're right. Seems more often in Cass County people have progressed? in a very negative way....From, employed with wages much lower than the state and national averages....To unemployed drawing unemployment and possibly other benefits while being counted as unemployed....To exhausting their unemployment and a couple of extensions and being dropped from the official unemployment statistics....Cass County people start out poor (the working poor)....It's very sad to look at the newspaper and see more homes being sold in sheriff's sales than anything else combined in the ad section. It hurts to be negative about this town, but being realistic, what has this communty got to offer for the average family right now?....and, with each passing day it seems to be getting worse. Higher interest rates, exploding electric, water and sewage bills. (Our own supposedlly city-owned generating plant is letting us down bigi time... higher natural gas bills, initiation of costs to remove trash, highest gasoline prices in this part of Indiana, businesses and industries not hiring, or laying off - don't even try to submit a resume or application anywhere....And, it just goes on....
So, then, what does this community have to offer to its citizens...Beautiful school buildings with tremendous athletic facilities -housing a very large number of students whose parents can't even afford to pay the full amount for meals and books. Highly paid judges and prosecutors. Well paid teachers who routinely are counting down to the end of a 180-day school year. Nice parks. Large number of churches. Large number of taverns. Better than average streets. Restaurants with decent prices for those who can afford to go out every once in a while. Good fire and police protection...
Weigh the pros and cons..Add whateever you want.

I have been in school for four years now. I was looking forward to graduation. I am not so sure right now. I have no leads on a job!!

well, lets see. we have a great airport now in case some businessman wants to fly in. hows that for economic development. maybe the mayor can make another trip to japan.
unfortunately, much of our business is tied to the auto industry. who ever thought kauffman would be cutting back or laying off.
i work in social services. our business is overwhelming and we have no money for services for those who have needs.
unemployment benefits are contingent upon an active job search. in logansport people just apply at the same old places with the same old result. sorry not hiring or sorry we're not taking applications. i feel so sorry for those who are seriously looking for a job. they just want to be able to support their families. food and shelter. basic needs. if those needs are not met you have angry people.
i keep hearing on the news that the economy is doing better. we have not seen it here yet but i do pray that its true.
