Title: AN EASY ECONOMY FIX!!!
Post by: Gardengirl on March 16, 2009, 12:56:13 AM
This was an article from the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper on Sunday. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on "How Would You Fix the Economy?" I thought this was the BEST idea.....I think this guy nailed it!   Dear Mr. President,
Patriotic retirement: There's about 40 million people over 50 in the work force -pay them $1 million apiece severance with the following stipulations:
1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.
2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.
3) They either buy a house/pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.    Can't get any easier than that

And then in 3 years you will have 20 million people asking for welfare because as Americans we don't know how to save a buck!! Awesome!

The major problem for the majority of Americans within that bracket would be the one that is keeping all of them in the job market in the first place; healthcare. . . And a million bucks isn't going to be sufficient to make that go away anytime soon, I don't care who you are. . .

Of course, for households with 2 earners in the age bracket it would mean two mill. . .

And if those two people invested properly, they would have had more than two million and a check for 2 million would be a smack in the face to them right about now!

There are millions of people right now that "invested properly" and there are a lot of them have lost the shirt off their backs. . . There is virtually no safe haven for that kind of cash right now, save traditional savings intruments. Other than that you might as well go to Vegas and roll the dice; same odds. . .   :spooked:

I'm thinking more traditional instruments like CD's, etc. None of that crapola that sucks your retirement savings down the sewer with the rats who run it. And then, watch out how much you've got in there, be aware of FDIC limitations!

I can't find it at the moment either so I'll have hope I can catch it again.  I was listening to the radio, not Rush, (can't stand him ), and, I'll have to admit, only caught part of it because I was otherwise busy.  I did catch that it was in one signed privately though. Will it matter in any case? Most of us are going to end up jobless and without health-care anyway!  :spooked:

Seriously though, even if it is under consideration I would expect him to listen to it, consider it, and if it isn't in the best interests of the average citizen reject it. It is after all only fair to consider all the possibilities. Isn't that a basic part of his responsibility?

Okay. You are not looking very hard are you? (4th line item down after I googled it).

In recent weeks, however, Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chairman of the tax-writing Finance Committee, has repeatedly advocated changing tax laws to include employer benefits, arguing that it makes sense to fund the health-care changes by sucking cash out of the existing system. Meanwhile, 13 other senators -- from both sides of the aisle -- have signed on to a plan for universal coverage that includes a tax on employer-provided benefits. . . .

So far, administration officials have been careful not to endorse the idea, which Obama blasted as a major tax increase last year after Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) made it the centerpiece of his presidential campaign's health plan. But the president hasn't slammed the door on it, either. . . .

So, it was okay when your candidate of choice made doing so an integral part of his campaign, but now it's a travesty? Can you say hypocrite?

That was me googling and I still don't see it.

Okay I was thinking this whole "tax health benefits" thing sounded familiar.  Yes McCain was all about this in the election.  I remember now.  I don't know much about it except it has the word tax in it and I don't like that word.

The one thing that was different is McCain was talking about giving a tax credit on the other end which isn't part of this plan as far as I can tell.  I'm just so sick of talk about getting hit with a tax on this and a tax on that at this point in time I could scream.  :gha: :gha: :gha: :gha:

Couldn't we have just paid off 50% of just about every mortgage in the country with the money that's been given away so far......no mortgages to default, no bank crashing for not getting paid, no insurance crashes for having to bail out the banks, all that mortgage-default-swap-flip-flop crap gone.  Put AIG out of business, Fannie and Freddie back strong, people get dug out of the hole they are in and start spending money on something other than debt payments, etc.

Surrounding the economy and jobs. . . perhaps. But I am not blaming it on the President, and that's what I was complaining about. I recognized things are going to get worse before they get better, and that it is actions/inactions that took place well before the current POTUS and his administration took office that have placed us into this situation.

Case in point! Care to outline just how you arrived at such a conclusion and validate it? You can't (and I'm not trying to be a jerk here) because such accusations and speculation are unsupportable.

There has not been a case in history wherein a sitting US President has enacted a change, especially of such broadsweeping proportions, and obtained positive results in 60 days; ever. So why is it that everyone seems to expect just that from the current administration?

Man, talk about unreasonable expectations!

I am seriously tired of the Race Card being played so freely. You can read what you want into anything but you would be surprised to learn that there are less racists then non-racists. It would be over except that some people cannot let it go and accuse people of being racist over EVERYTHING, So be it.

And I am 100% certain that you have absolutely no basis in knowledge on which to make that call.

Sorry to ruffle your feathers there, but when you make such a broadsweeping and general statement like "the Oprah crowd" it is important to clarify exactly what you mean when you say such things. In my experience that statement is far from complimentary and typically runs along racial slander in intention.

So. . . what you meant to say was that anyone that voted for the current POTUS is stupid, senile, or unintelligent in origin?

Sorry, I disagree!

I am seriously tired of the Race Card being played so freely. You can read what you want into anything but you would be surprised to learn that there are less racists then non-racists. It would be over except that some people cannot let it go and accuse people of being racist over EVERYTHING, So be it.

Since you are new to this forum I'll let this comment pass except to say that you won't typically find the race issue brought into play herein.

I will however call things as I see them and the derrogatory implications of a statement such as "the Oprah crowd" require that meaning be clarified lest someone misunderstand.

As someone who has watched Oprah since the beginning I knew what they meant by Oprah crowd. It is a diverse and many races, religions and even both sexes crowd. We should of put her in as president as she has united alot of people over the years. But alas, she really is not a politician.

As too letting my remarks or opinions pass. I will remind you that I too tell it like it is and how I think. I am no different than the rest and let some of your remarks 'pass' too. I don't feel the need to prove how I came around to my opinion just like I don't expect you to either. This is an opinion forum and you guys should learn to attack the opinion but not the poster. JMO

And would you care to enlighten the readers as to just how you knew these things? Have you worked for a ratings company and conducted demographics surrounding viewership of programming? Or are you making some assumptions here that you shouldn't?

Or perhaps you are a medium, in which case may I direct you to the corral wherein I have posted a bevy of topics on the subject.

Preach it on sister. You don't have to like anything I write or read it for that matter. And that "too" works both ways. Don't let my remarks pass if you have an intelligent reply or input on the matter at hand, on my account. I'm a big boy and can carry my own weight when called upon to do so.

I am not here to sway anyone's opinion or perspectives, but rather to express my own and engage in meaningful discourse or discussion surrounding the subjects that are of interest to me; the end goal always being enlightenment. To teach or be taught.

You want to cross sabres, look elsewhere. If you are willing to learn in the process that is another case entirely.

None of the above just a person who can make up her own mind, see what is going on and doesn't have to prove it to you

Awesome!  Do you treat yourself when you're sick, too?
