Title: SLUGS
Post by: Gryphon on October 30, 2006, 09:17:06 PM
Anyone know how to get rid of slugs? Theyve popped up in the past week, probably brought in with some new pine straw....and are all over everything now.

Filling a bowl or pan with beer is one that I've always heard....the beer has to be replaced continually, because it loses it's effectiveness w/ age and dilution.

Another idea, if slugs are eating your plants, is to make a barrier with sandpaper....the slugs won't cross the scratchy surface.

And, just as a side note....EWWWWW!!!!

Thanks for the tips guys.

Want "eeeewwww??"
Try picking up a pumpkin in the dark and not realizing it is COVERED in them.
Talk about nasty. My neighbors probably thought someone was being attacked in my yard the way I yelled.

Haha, I can relate to that one....when I was in high school, a bunch of us decided to do a little innocent pranking the night before Halloween.....ok, maybe not so innocent. Anyway, we decided to steal a bunch of pumpkins from a huge pumpkin patch and then bust them in front of people's houses that we didn't like. Don't really know what the point was there, but anywho.....I picked out a rather large pumpkin and was running back to the car to toss it in the trunk, when I noticed it had a HUGE slug attached to the side of it....I proceeded to scream bloody murder, tossing it into the air, and having it come down and smash right in front of me, spewing pumpkin guts all over the all black ensemble I was wearing in an attempt to look covert.

Yuck. That reminds me of a horror film I saw as a child...when I was definitely too young to be watching it!

Salt will kill them instantly.

(Check to see if the plants in the bed are salt-resistant, first.)

Doesn't take a large amount to kill them.

Ortho Slug-B-Gone, you can find it in the garden section.  You broadcast it on the lawn and the slugs are attracted to it and die.  The stuff works great.

Or you can wait for the weather to cool of as it has today and they will stop crawling around.

Or, you can scoop them up in a jar, heat an inch of olive oil (extra virgin) in the bottom of a deep frying pan, pop them in, and, in no time at all, you'll have a crunchy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside tv snack.

Best with a "big" beer, but can be handled on a cracker w/asiago cheese and a hearty bordeaux.

Put a mixture of coffee grounds and egg shells in the path they are using, they will go away.

UGH, those nasty things find their way into my kitchen every time it rains.  The girls want to salt them. I just want the things out of my house.  Scoop them up in a dust pan..throw them outside, THEN you can salt them. <shiver>

DE Powder! The stuff they use in swimming pool filters! It's made of tiny shells that have extremely sharp edges.

Sprinkle a little around plants you want to protect and the little buggers won't even try to crawl across it!

wonder if I can sprinkle that around the walls in my kitchen to keep those suckers from coming into my house .
